Buying training for employees

Private IT training or public classes?

Choose the format that fits your learners, their work, and your operating schedule. A private class becomes worth investigating when a group shares a requirement; it is not automatically cheaper or more effective.

Investigate public seats when…

People need different topics or levels, dates must be staggered, or one employee needs structured instruction. Confirm that the scheduled class and its support address the actual gap.

Investigate a private class when…

A group needs the same capability, can learn at a compatible level, and can attend together. Ask for a scoped proposal before comparing it with public-seat pricing.

A reusable team decision

Choose a route from readiness, count, and coverage

Headcount alone does not choose the format. Start with whether learners share the same requirement and starting level, then compare operational coverage and complete cost.

Starting route by learner pattern
Learner patternUseful starting routeWhat must be verified
One or a few learners; same requirementCompare suitable public seats with internal practice. Stagger dates when coverage matters.Confirm per-seat scope, readiness, dates, support and every included item.
Mixed readiness; shared requirementSplit foundation work from the later shared course. Public seats or internal practice may fit each subgroup better.Do not buy one intermediate cohort until the provider explains how different starting levels will be supported.
Aligned group; enough learners to compare a cohortRequest a private-group proposal and compare it with exact public-seat scenarios.Require learner limits, customization, labs, instructor, dates, staff coverage, complete group price and quote expiry.
Different roles or different requirementsUse separate paths or a common internal foundation; one private class may solve neither requirement.Map each role to the work task and evidence it needs before asking for a bundled proposal.

Cost boundary: Do not compare a per-seat amount with a group cap or private quote as though the units match. State the learner count, included exams and materials, staff time, travel if relevant, and every unknown before comparing totals.

Keep self-study and internal practice in the comparison

When suitable learning materials, protected time, a practice environment, and feedback are available internally, a class may add little. Identify what is missing before buying: explanation, guided practice, troubleshooting support, or a schedule the team can maintain.

Questions to resolve for the actual offers
DecisionPublic class seatsPrivate group
Starting skillsA published class normally assumes a defined starting level. Check each learner against it.Ask whether the instructor can accommodate the actual skill mix. A private booking does not guarantee customization.
Schedule and coverageSeparate dates may let colleagues cover one another, if suitable classes are available.A shared session may remove several people from operations together. Plan coverage before choosing dates.
Practice and feedbackVerify lab access, instructor support, class size, and time for individual questions.Specify the tasks the group needs to practice and the feedback expected. Confirm these in the proposal.
CurriculumCompare the published syllabus with the work or credential requirement.Agree the scope and any customization in writing. Do not assume a shorter course still covers the full syllabus.
Price basisA per-seat amount applies only to the stated product, audience, and conditions.Get a price for the actual group, including learner limits, extras, and quote validity.

These Network+ rows are dated public-course observations from provider pages, not recommendations, reservations, or private-team quotes. Delivery, inclusions and unresolved terms differ. The stored unit is per course; confirm in writing that the price covers one learner before multiplying it by a team size.

The rows above do not establish a private-class amount. Keep the private total unknown until a provider supplies a written group quote with the exact learner count, scope, dates, daily hours, time zone, labs, instructor support, equipment, terms and quote expiry.

Review the full Network+ offer comparison, then copy only the offers that fit the requirement into the editable quote worksheet.

A worked mixed-readiness and coverage decision

Illustrative scenario: six administrators need to support an Azure workload. Two still need networking foundations; four are ready for the administrator material. Buying six places in one intermediate class may leave the first two behind. Start them with prerequisite work, then compare a suitable later group class with staggered public seats.

Write the coverage choice into the comparison. Sending two ready learners at a time can leave four people covering operations, but may require several suitable public sessions. A private date could remove all six people from operations together. Ask whether the provider can split practice by readiness; a private booking alone does not establish that it can.

This example illustrates the evaluation process; it is not a customer case, a quote, or a Microsoft-recommended staffing plan.

Lower resource cost does not establish better training

Compare complete cash costs and staff time, then check whether each option provides the needed instruction and practice. If an offer omits labs or uses a different syllabus, resolve that difference before treating the totals as comparable.

Federal teams can use the same comparison

Keep offer scope, learner readiness, time away from work and unknown private pricing in the same worksheet. Then follow the agency’s own approval and acquisition process. The federal training request checklist helps prepare the work requirement and approval questions. If the responsible acquisition office is considering a Multiple Award Schedule purchase, the GSA buying checklist identifies contract-scope and offer questions. Neither route directs an agency to use a particular purchasing method.

One decision, five short steps

Move from the work need to an approval-ready choice

Start wherever the decision is blocked. The comparison and budget worksheets stay in your browser; their entries do not carry into the separate request form. If you choose to send that form, its disclosed details go to Learnerside, not a provider. A later provider introduction requires separate consent naming that provider. Save completed notes in your organization’s approved workspace.

  1. 1
Define the work and learner need

Use optional browser-local planning, or explicitly send a short request to Learnerside. No provider receives it.

  2. 2
Choose the delivery format — you are here

Compare self-study, public seats and a private cohort against the actual constraint.

  3. 3
    Build the complete budget

Keep tuition, staff time, extras and unresolved costs separate.

  4. 4
    Compare exact offers

Check inclusions, price basis, dates, availability and terms without filling gaps by assumption.

  5. 5
    Prepare the approval brief

Turn the selected option, evidence and open questions into a reviewable local handoff.
