Start with the work the training should support, then gather the course details, costs and approval questions. Use this SF-182 preparation checklist before booking. Your agency determines the required system, approvals and purchasing process.
Need help with the training decision? Ask about federal IT training. The short request sends its disclosed details to Learnerside only when you choose Send and give permission to reply. The optional planner stays in your browser. Neither route establishes agency approval.

SF-182 preparation is not purchasing authority
OPM says SF-182 is intended to approve employee training and later record its completion. When an agency uses it to procure training, OPM directs that agency to its contracting office for the applicable policy. A provider accepting SF-182 does not establish your authority to buy.
Ask your training office which agency workflow to follow. Confirm the required approvals and payment arrangements before making a commitment. This guide is a preparation aid, not an official form, agency approval or a promise of reimbursement.
If your agency is considering a Multiple Award Schedule purchase, use the GSA IT-training buying checklist to prepare the contract-scope and offer questions for its acquisition office.
For a federal civilian employee or coordinator, the checklist below helps organize that conversation. Contractor employees should use their employer’s process; this page does not describe military tuition-assistance benefits.
Choose the responsible approval route
Federal job requirements and military education benefits are different decisions
A course can relate to federal or DoD work without being payable through the same process. Learnerside does not determine benefit eligibility, reimbursement or purchasing authority. Use the route that matches your status before collecting provider paperwork.
Federal civilian
Ask the agency training office which workflow, approvals and purchasing method apply. Use the SF-182 preparation below only where the agency directs it.
Federal contractor
Use the employer and controlling-contract process. A government work requirement does not by itself authorize an employee purchase or reimbursement.
Active-duty, Guard, or Reserve
Start with the official education office or benefits portal for your service and component. Confirm the exact program, eligibility, school or provider rules, approval timing and payment process before enrolling.
Veteran or transitioning service member
Use VA’s official education and training benefits page and an authorized benefits counselor for the applicable program. A training page, provider claim or DoD work-role mapping does not establish VA eligibility.
Keep personally identifying, service and benefits records in the authorized government system. The Learnerside finder can organize non-sensitive training requirements, but it does not submit a benefit claim or agency request.
A useful handoff to your training office
Six things to prepare
The work and skill gap. Name one task the learner should perform afterward. Describe current experience and what is difficult now. For a team, check each learner’s readiness rather than assuming one starting level.
The learning approach. Compare relevant official learning, internal practice and paid instruction. Explain what a class would add, such as supervised labs or feedback. A credential is optional unless the actual requirement calls for one.
The exact offer. Obtain the provider and course identity, syllabus, prerequisites, dates, delivery location or online format, instructional hours and access requirements. Record the quote date and what remains unconfirmed.
The complete cost questions. Separate tuition, materials, exams if relevant, labs, travel and other charges. Check inclusions to avoid counting them twice. An unanswered cost is unknown, not zero. Use the training budget tool for planning assumptions.
Time, coverage and access. Explain when learning and practice will happen, how normal duties will be covered and which approved environment is needed. Ask the agency which hours and cost categories belong in its official record.
Follow-up and open decisions. Propose a practice task and a later check of independent application. List who must confirm funding, approvals, any service agreement, booking terms and completion records.
These are editorial preparation questions. They do not replace the fields or instructions in your agency’s system. Use the quote checklist when the supplier’s offer leaves gaps.
Where the official form fits
The OPM SF-182 PDF reviewed here is revised March 2020; GSA’s form listing identifies the same revision. Use those official links and your agency’s instructions to check the version before use.
Section A: trainee information. Complete personnel details only through your agency’s approved process.
Section B: training details, including objectives, hours and course information.
Section C: costs and billing. Ask the responsible office to confirm financial coding and payment details.
Sections D and E: approvals and concurrence; the form specifies agency-required approvals and an authorized agency official.
Section F: certification of completion and evaluation, handled through the agency.
Do not send completed government forms, personnel records or sensitive operational details to Learnerside. The blank summary linked here has no personnel fields and does not submit anything to this site. Keep actual requests and approvals in your agency’s approved systems.
Worked federal handoff · Illustrative, not an agency decision or supplier offer
From a networking gap to an agency-ready training summary
Suppose two federal employees support network operations and need more consistent troubleshooting practice. Network+ may be one way to structure broad networking foundations, but the work requirement comes first. The invented example below does not establish that the credential, a class or a particular provider is required.
Work outcome: diagnose a fictional connectivity failure in an approved practice environment, explain the evidence and document a permitted corrective action.
Readiness and alternatives: compare current skills with the relevant Network+ scope, then use official objectives, free study and internal practice where those meet the need. Seek instruction when a specific feedback, lab or scheduling gap remains.
Offer information: record the exact course, exam version if relevant, learner count, dates, time zone, delivery, labs, accessibility, cancellation terms and quote date. A listed date does not reserve a seat.
Costs: tuition, labs, exam, travel, staff coverage and every other charge remain unknown until a dated offer and agency review establish them.
Agency decision: ask which system, approvals, funds, payment route, service-agreement rules and completion record apply before anyone books or pays.
OPM says SF-182 is intended to approve and record employee training. If an agency chooses to use it to procure training, OPM directs the agency to its contracting office for agency-specific policy. This example neither requires SF-182 nor supplies purchasing authority. OPM SF-182 guidance — checked September 8, 2026.
Training need: Network troubleshooting for [approved work responsibility].
Learners and readiness: [count] employees; [confirmed starting experience].
Approaches compared: [official/free study], [internal practice], [paid offer if needed].
Offer and costs: [exact dated information or UNKNOWN].
Application check: [fictional practice task and agency-approved follow-up].
Agency questions: [system, approvers, funds, purchase/payment route, agreement and completion record].
Keep completed government forms, personnel records and sensitive operational details in agency-approved systems.
Questions to resolve before booking
What is the SF-182 spending limit?
Do not infer a universal limit from this guide or from a provider’s checkout. OPM’s answer directs agencies to their contracting offices for agency-specific procurement policy. Ask the responsible agency office which authority, limits and process apply to the proposed purchase.
Can I pay personally and request reimbursement later?
Confirm the agency’s permitted purchase and reimbursement process before spending. A manager supporting the learning goal or a provider accepting registration does not answer that question. This guide cannot promise retroactive approval or repayment.
Do I need a continued service agreement?
Ask your training office whether one applies and review any required agreement before committing. The SF-182 instructions, page 9, describe agency-determined requirements. This page does not decide your eligibility or obligations.
What if the course date, price or format changes?
Return the changed offer to the responsible agency office and ask what needs updating before accepting it. Verify cancellation, substitution and rescheduling terms with the provider. Preserve the revised quote and agency decision through the approved process.
Take the requirements summary to the right office
Bring the work need, learning options, dated offer, cost questions and proposed follow-up to your training office. Ask who owns the remaining decisions. For a DoD position, separately confirm the assigned work role and proficiency requirements in the federal and DoD training guide.
Prints the guide with its sources and the dates they were checked, so the decision stays checkable away from this page.
One decision, five short steps
Move from the work need to an approval-ready choice
Start wherever the decision is blocked. The comparison and budget worksheets stay in your browser; their entries do not carry into the separate planning page. If you choose to send its request form, its disclosed details go to Learnerside, not a provider. A later provider introduction requires separate consent naming that provider.Save completed notes in your organization’s approved workspace.
