What it does not prove
- That you meet ISC2’s experience and endorsement requirements merely because you passed the exam.
- That you can lead a security program without evidence of real cross-domain judgment.

Decision summary
The call: Choose CISSP when you already work across at least two security domains, are moving toward architecture, risk, engineering, or security-program responsibility, and have a credible path to ISC2's five-year experience gate. Do not use CISSP as a first cybersecurity certification; build operational depth first through work, labs, and an earlier-stage credential that matches your actual responsibilities.

What the decision means
Use CISSP when you already make cross-domain security decisions and need a broad senior-practice credential for architecture, engineering, risk, or program responsibility.

Preparation decision
Paid structure can make sense when an employer is funding it, a deadline is fixed, or cross-domain feedback is the missing constraint. It cannot replace the required experience.

ISC2 and provider pages checked September 13, 2026. ONLC publishes complete 2026 calendars; New Horizons and Learning Tree publish useful course and package evidence, but their checked date displays omit the year, so those dates do not enter Learnerside’s matcher.
CISSP is an experience-based certification with a broad adaptive exam. Compare the delivered exam-outline revision, the judgment practice a learner performs and the complete purchase package—not just whether a five-day course lists all eight domains.
Exam scope: ISC2 publishes eight domains weighted from 10% to 16%. The current exam is computerized adaptive testing with 100–150 items in up to three hours; ISC2 says its exams are experiential and include experience-based questions that studying alone cannot replace.
Training scope: The current outline took effect April 15, 2024. Domain 1 is 16%, Domain 2 is 10%, Domains 3–5 are 13% each, Domain 6 is 12%, Domain 7 is 13%, and Domain 8 is 10%. A provider should identify the delivered revision and show how scenario work and feedback support that scope.
How to use it: Before buying exam preparation, map documented work to at least two domains. Full CISSP status requires five cumulative years; one qualifying degree or approved credential may waive at most one year. Candidates without the required experience can pass the exam and become an Associate of ISC2 while completing it.
ISC2 CISSP certification exam outline (checked September 13, 2026) · ISC2 CISSP experience requirements (checked September 13, 2026)
Course: Provider course SCISSP, Certified Information System Security Professional: Sixth Edition
Format and pace: Five consecutive live-online weekdays; the September session uses an eight-hour window and later sessions use a six-hour-45-minute window.
Published coverage:
Hands-on evidence: The page markets the course as hands-on and includes a practice test, but does not publish a learner-performed lab list, scenario-feedback model or access period.
Readiness evidence: ONLC calls this an upper-level course and highly recommends Network+ or Security+ certification, or equivalent professional experience. That is course-readiness guidance; ISC2 certification eligibility remains a separate five-year, two-domain test.
Likely fit: An experienced security practitioner who can use a concentrated review week and obtains written confirmation that the delivered material maps to the current exam outline.
Archived provider calendar examples: These dates were observed when the source was checked; some have passed. They are not upcoming class cards, open seats, or a current quote. Use the training finder for its time-checked references, then verify dates and availability with the provider.
2 additional dated observations are retained in the finder; passed or stale references cannot be added to a request.

ONLC CISSP live course outline and calendar (checked September 13, 2026)
Course: Provider course GCISSP, CISSP On-Demand self-study
Format and pace: Self-paced with 180-day, 24/7 access beginning at purchase.
Published coverage:
Hands-on evidence: The page claims lab exercises but does not establish the platform, exact exercises, feedback, resets or support availability.
Readiness evidence: The provider recommends Network+ or Security+ certification, or equivalent professional experience. Self-paced access does not remove the advanced baseline or ISC2 experience requirement.
Likely fit: An experienced practitioner who needs scheduling flexibility and can independently pace review, practice and weak-domain remediation.
Dated schedule: No exact calendar is linked in Learnerside’s retained observations. Ask for every meeting date, time and source time zone.
Verify before approval:
ONLC CISSP on-demand course outline (checked September 13, 2026)
Course: CISSP Certification Training, provider course 200002333 / CourseID 360506E
Format and pace: Five-day virtual instructor-led course; private-group delivery is a separate offer.
Published coverage:
Hands-on evidence: The page states hands-on labs, practical exercises and 90-day recordings but does not expose the exact learner-performed exercises or lab-access term.
Readiness evidence: The provider targets experienced security practitioners and recommends Network+ and Security+ or equivalent experience. Its abbreviated waiver wording should not replace ISC2’s current approved waiver rules.
Likely fit: An experienced learner who wants official-courseware claims, live instruction and recordings and can verify the exact seller, delivery team, current outline and voucher status.
Dated schedule: No exact calendar is linked in Learnerside’s retained observations. Ask for every meeting date, time and source time zone.
Verify before approval:
New Horizons CISSP course 200002333 (checked September 13, 2026)
Course: Course 2058, CISSP Training and Certification Prep
Format and pace: Five-day live instructor-led online or in-person course with after-course coaching.
Published coverage:
Hands-on evidence: The page describes practical insights and coaching but does not publish a learner-performed lab list or lab-access period.
Readiness evidence: Learning Tree labels the course intermediate and points to ISC2’s experience requirements. Passing a course or exam does not create the work experience required for full certification.
Likely fit: An employer-sponsored learner who values a stated voucher and coaching and can confirm buyer eligibility, course version, practical work and the calendar year.
Dated schedule: No exact calendar is linked in Learnerside’s retained observations. Ask for every meeting date, time and source time zone.
Verify before approval:
Learning Tree CISSP course 2058 (checked September 13, 2026)
Evidence boundary: This comparison paraphrases public outlines; it does not republish a provider syllabus, verify a seat, or prove that every listed topic receives equal live instruction. A provider-issued proposal should identify the exact course version, schedule, delivery organization, inclusions and terms.
ISC2 requires five cumulative years of full-time experience across at least two CISSP domains. One qualifying degree or approved credential may waive at most one year. If you pass without the required experience, the route is Associate of ISC2 while you complete it. A training company’s shorthand does not replace ISC2’s current waiver list, part-time rules, internship documentation or endorsement process.
ISC2’s current exam outline took effect April 15, 2024. ONLC’s live page calls its course Sixth Edition and covers all eight domains, but its own appendix still says it maps to the April 2021 exam outline. Before approval, require the delivered course revision, publication date and mapping to the current 16/10/13/13/13/12/13/10 domain weights in writing.
ONLC lists USD 2,995 for five live weekdays with a practice test and no exam voucher, plus a separate USD 1,795 on-demand course with 180-day access. New Horizons lists USD 3,395 with official-courseware, lab and 90-day-recording claims, but does not state voucher inclusion. Learning Tree lists a voucher, official ISC2 materials and coaching; its current commercial amount is USD 4,295 and a separate government amount requires buyer eligibility confirmation. These are source-dated observations, not quotes or rankings.
ONLC publishes October 19–23, November 16–20 and December 14–18, 2026 and January 18–22, 2027 with every daily Eastern-time window. The current New Horizons and Learning Tree displays show upcoming dates and times without a calendar year. Learnerside preserves them as transparent research but does not invent the year or normalize them into a learner’s time zone.

Learnerside editorially associates this credential with the planning roles below. O*NET independently reports these titles for those roles’ occupations; O*NET does not say this credential is required or maps to them. This is not employer-demand, placement, or hiring evidence. Titles vary by employer, seniority, and location.
Source: O*NET OnLine supports the reported titles only; the credential-to-role association is Learnersideplanning context.
These are Learnerside editorial associations based on skill and role fit, not a vendor, O*NET, employer-demand, or universal-requirement claim. The sequence labels are planning context, not proof that this credential causes advancement, hiring, or placement.
Credential credit map
Learnerside shows cited equivalency, baseline, stacking, and renewal signals as planning context. These are not hiring guarantees or universal transfer credits.
Earning this credential counts toward the target stackable credential.
ISC2 Associate pathway: passing this ISC2 certification exam without required experience can lead to Associate of ISC2 status (up to six years for this exam path).
Official sourceEquivalency, credit, and baseline mappings come from official/authoritative sources and are shown as planning context only. ACE recommendations are accepted at each institution's discretion; DoD baseline status must be confirmed against the current official DoD Cyber Exchange table; 'comparable scope' means similar role positioning, NOT an equivalence or substitution. No certification guarantees a job, salary, or outcome.
The DoD lists this certification as an approved foundational qualification option for 11 cyber work roles, per the DoD 8140 qualification matrix (V2.1, effective 2025-09-19; checked 2026-08-07). These are work-role classifications, not job openings, not hiring eligibility, and not evidence that these roles are available to you.
Mapped at advanced proficiency
This covers the foundational step only. DoD 8140 qualification has more than one part: a foundational qualification, then a resident on-the-job qualification within the role, then continuing professional development. A certification can satisfy the foundational part. It does not by itself qualify anyone for the work role.
It is also one route, not the required one. The DoD lists a qualifying degree, approved training, or a certification as alternatives to the same foundational baseline. And a certification approved at a higher proficiency level also applies at lower proficiency levels for that same work role, so the level shown above is where the matrix maps it, not a ceiling.
The matrix sets the department-wide baseline. A component, command, or contract may set stricter foundational requirements for a particular position, and environment-specific resident requirements are left to component discretion — so this cannot tell you what one specific job will ask for. Sources: the DoD 8140 qualification matrix V2.1 (XLSX) for the mappings, and DoDM 8140.03 (PDF) for the qualification lifecycle. IAT, IAM and IASAE levels belong to DoD 8570.01-M, which DoDM 8140.03 cancelled, and are not part of 8140.
Yes. CISSP runs on a 3-year certification cycle and must be maintained to stay active (as of 2026-06-14).
CISSP requires ongoing maintenance - an annual fee plus CPE credits - across each three-year cycle.

Weighing CISSP as a senior-security credential? Learnerside's free planner checks the fit - nobody pays us to recommend anything.
Maintain CISSP by paying ISC2's Annual Maintenance Fee each year and earning CPE credits across the 3-year cycle (as of 2026-06-14).
Renewal is ongoing rather than a single event: you pay the AMF annually and log CPEs (an average of 40 a year across the cycle) toward the cycle total.

The ISC2 Annual Maintenance Fee is $135 per year, and you need 120 CPE credits per 3-year cycle (an average of 40 a year across the cycle) (as of 2026-06-14).
The $135/yr AMF is a single flat fee even if you hold several ISC2 certs; CPEs are earned separately. (The CISSP exam itself is $749 standard.)

The deciding factor is your experience and target role — and CISSP is explicitly not an entry credential. ISC2's CISSP is an advanced, management-leaning security certification that requires substantial paid experience to fully certify. It fits people already established in security who are moving toward senior or leadership roles; it's the wrong first step for a career-changer.
CISSP is ISC2's advanced-level credential; ISC2 requires five years of cumulative paid work experience across the exam's domains to become fully certified (candidates who pass without the experience earn the Associate of ISC2 designation while they accrue it). The exam covers eight domains including Security and Risk Management, Security Architecture and Engineering, and Security Operations (ISC2 CISSP exam outline). It fits established security professionals targeting senior/lead roles; skip it if you don't yet have the security experience it's built for. We publish no certification salary or ROI claims.

Learnerside maps CISSP to senior and leadership security roles, and it is earned after experience rather than being a job guarantee. Learnerside maps it to security-analyst and security-operations tracks as a strong post-experience signal. Pay varies by occupation and location, not by the cert.
Learnerside associates CISSP with roles like Cybersecurity Analyst and IT Security Operations Specialist as a strong signal earned after experience, not an entry credential (Learnerside role mapping). For occupation-level pay context only, BLS OEWS May 2025 reports a median annual wage of $129,180 for Information Security Analysts (SOC 15-1212) — an occupation median across the whole classification, not earnings caused by holding the certification. This is role-fit context, not a market size, demand, salary, or ROI claim. That mapping is Learnerside's own, not a measurement of what employers infer from the credential, and it does not place you in a role.

How hard CISSP - Certified Information Systems Security Professional is depends on the background it assumes, and the vendor states that directly: 5 years of cumulative paid work experience in 2 or more of the 8 CISSP domains; qualifying part-time work and internships may count. ISC2 states that earning a post-secondary degree (bachelors or masters) in computer science, information technology (IT) or related fields may satisfy up to one year of the required experience, as may one additional credential from the ISC2 approved list, leaving a minimum of 4 years.
That is the vendor's own statement, not a Learnerside rating and not a pass rate — we found no candidate pass rate on the vendor pages we reviewed. Compare it against the exam scope the vendor publishes and your own hands-on gaps to decide what to practise.

Know that CISSP is built for experienced security professionals: ISC2 requires five years of cumulative paid work experience across its domains to fully certify (you can pass first and earn the Associate of ISC2 designation while you accrue it). Come in with real security operations, architecture, and risk exposure — this is not a first credential.
Before CISSP, the practical baseline is broad hands-on and conceptual security experience across the eight domains, weighted across Security and Risk Management (16%), the Architecture/Network/IAM/Operations domains (~13% each), and the rest (ISC2 CISSP exam outline). ISC2's five-year experience requirement is a defining feature, not a formality — the exam's management framing rewards people who have actually done the work; the Associate of ISC2 path exists for those who pass before meeting it. The most useful preparation is mapping your real experience to the domains and closing the gaps. We won't invent requirements ISC2 doesn't state.
