Security credential decision
Both credentials span technical and governance decisions. The useful distinction is the target role, exam scope, experience evidence and credential rules—not a management-versus-hands-on slogan.
CompTIA recommends at least ten years of general hands-on IT experience, including five years of security, plus several intermediate certifications or equivalent knowledge. There is no formal post-exam endorsement path. The four domains emphasize governance, architecture, engineering and operations, and results are reported pass or fail.
ISC2 requires five cumulative years of paid work across at least two of eight CISSP domains, with at most a one-year waiver for a qualifying degree or approved credential. Passing without the experience leads to Associate of ISC2 status while the requirement is completed; endorsement is part of earning CISSP.
If an employer, contract or DoD 8140/DCWF work role names one credential, verify the exact wording and proficiency level. When neither is named, compare the role you are moving into, the evidence you already have and the gap training must close.
SecurityX preparation should identify CAS-005 and show applied architecture, engineering, operations and governance work. CISSP preparation should map to ISC2’s current eight-domain outline and support broad scenario reasoning. For either path, verify the outline, course version, exact labs or exercises, instructor feedback, schedule, recordings, voucher, retake conditions and total price.
