Security+ decision
For a defense-workforce requirement, first capture the DCWF work role, proficiency and qualification route. A course or certification alone does not establish qualification for your position.
The call: Choose CompTIA Security+ when your target work values it and you already have Network+-level networking knowledge or equivalent hands-on IT and systems experience. It is a broad, vendor-neutral security baseline, not a substitute for operating experience: if ports, protocols, identity, logs, and system hardening are still unfamiliar, build those foundations before paying for SY0-701.
You can ask now or keep researching. Learnerside can reply only with your permission; sharing with a provider needs separate consent naming that provider.
Planning for a team? Read the Security+ team guide.
For one exam attempt. Preparation, retakes, tax and renewal are separate; recheck the current price before paying.
Why this advice is practical: Learnerside was founded by Alexander Shick after more than a decade helping individuals and IT teams evaluate technical training and certification paths.
Certification details change. Always confirm final pricing, availability, and credential terms on the official provider page linked in the sources below before you pay for anything.
What the decision means
Security+ is useful when you need broad coverage across threats, architecture, security operations, identity, and risk. It can organize what you know and satisfy a named certification preference. It does not replace experience operating systems, networks, cloud services, or security tools.
The current SY0-701 outline weights these five areas:
Use only systems and labs you own or are authorized to test.
Before you schedule
CompTIA does not enforce a prerequisite, but its recommended background is a useful warning about the level of context the exam assumes. Do not turn “no formal prerequisite” into “best first step.”
Check your exam version before paying: As of September 28, 2026, CompTIA offers Security+ V7 (SY0-701) and expects V8 to launch on or around November 17, 2026. CompTIA lists June 11, 2027 as the English V7 exam retirement date; other listed languages retire August 13, 2027. This page's study guidance covers V7, not V8. Confirm the version and date for your language before buying training or booking an exam. CompTIA version overview · V7 exam details
Explain ports, protocols, DNS, addressing, routing, segmentation, and why a traffic flow is allowed or blocked.
Work with accounts, permissions, services, patching, authentication, MFA, least privilege, and basic hardening.
Read logs, follow an alert, document a change, check backups, and explain the difference between prevention, detection, and response.
Choose A+ first if operating systems, hardware, and everyday troubleshooting are the gap. Choose Network+ first if protocols, addressing, routing, and network troubleshooting are the gap. Compare ISC2 CC when you want an earlier cybersecurity starting point and Security+'s recommended background is ahead of you. Skip Security+ when your target work does not value a broad security baseline and a role-specific route would be more useful.
Instruction and product references checked 2026-10-15 UTC. CompTIA-authored SY0-701 course outline: 2023 copyright · 15-page PDF hosted by Koenig Solutions; lesson families pp1–14, resources/copyright p15. This is a dated curriculum reference, not proof of the revision delivered by a seller.
The exam weights describe assessment. The course has 16 lesson families, organized differently. Match the selected courseware and lab revision to your exam; the existing V7/V8 transition warning still matters.
The outline separates Learn activities, eBook content and Labs. Descriptions do not establish your lab license, personally operated practice or instructor feedback.
The current V7 comparison describes lessons, videos, interactive work, simulated labs and assessments; estimated 25–40 catalog hours. Selected SKU, price, activation and access expiry need confirmation.
The V7 comparison describes guided tasks in a live virtual environment; estimated 15–25 catalog hours. This is separate from Learn’s simulated activities and a seller’s furnished lab license.
The V7 comparison describes timed practice exams, quizzes and objective-level feedback; estimated 10–20 catalog hours. This is exam practice, not complete instruction or an actual exam booking.
CompTIA’s V7 comparison separately describes Learn+Labs with simulated and live-VM practice, estimated 30–60 catalog hours. Catalog hours are not personal study effort or live contact time. Its Learn entry statement allows no prior related job-role experience; that is separate from the exam’s recommended background and your readiness. A course, exam voucher, retake and renewal product are different purchases.
Match CompTIA authorization to the legal seller or franchise, delivery organization, territory and exact course. The references below include provider claims and dated offer evidence; no current issuer-directory match for your selected package is established here. Shared official courseware does not make labs, feedback, access or schedules interchangeable.
SY0-701 official courseware, five-day virtual instruction; provider claims 180-day post-class labs, 90-day recordings and practice tests. Its voucher is separate. Nine provider agenda sections do not equal the 16-lesson issuer outline. Visible 8–4 CST calendars conflict with structured 9–5 CST; confirm the complete dates, time zone and seat.

The separate toolkit advertises one-year access, seven modules, quizzes, a question bank, a repeatable simulator and voucher on request; its exact exam-code alignment and identity as a particular CertMaster SKU remain unverified.
A generic live-course price does not establish a separate classroom amount or where the instructor teaches. Match the selected event and attendance option before comparing classroom with live online instruction.
One provider-published example, reference 271C52US, lists January 4–8, 2027, 9:00 AM–4:30 PM EST, with Washington, DC or Online (AnyWare) attendance. The source identifies mixed attendance for this event; it does not locate the instructor or confirm a seat, street venue or net teaching hours. Retained October 12 live and on-demand observations describe different packages. Voucher release has assessment/proof conditions, including an 85% requirement; it is not an immediately supplied unconditional inclusion. Confirm buyer-location/funding rules, permitted labs and the selected support/access term.
ONLC describes its public SY0-701 class as live online, whether you attend from home or an ONLC center. Center attendance provides a place to join the online class; it does not establish an instructor teaching in your room or a separately priced classroom course.
The checked terms distinguish an initial exam within 12 months from a separate replacement-voucher term of six months from the original course. Confirm your selected entitlement, voucher expiry, readiness and attendance conditions; do not assume a full 12-month retake window. These live-course terms do not establish the separate self-paced product’s lab or support access.

A short boot camp, a longer full-day course, and an evening or weekend schedule can cover the same certification while offering very different amounts of instruction, practice, feedback, and recovery time.
If you already work with networks, systems, identity, logs, and security controls, compare focused SY0-701 review, practice questions, and targeted labs instead of automatically buying a long foundations course.
Confirm the prerequisite assumptions and the hours spent on review versus hands-on work.
If networking or operating-system work is still new, compare a longer or spread-out path with guided security labs and prerequisite support. No formal exam prerequisite does not mean an intensive boot camp is the best first step.
Prioritize individual lab time, instructor feedback, and enough space between sessions to practise.
Compare consecutive weekdays, shorter sessions, evenings, and weekends in your own time zone. Count every live meeting and total teaching hours; calendar duration alone does not establish depth.

Five researched provider examples, not a market ranking. ONLC’s SY0-701 instructor-led course lists USD 2,495 tuition and five scheduled days. Late registration can cost more. ONLC and New Horizons details were checked September 10, 2026; Learning Tree and Global Knowledge details were checked September 11, 2026; NetCom details were refreshed September 12, 2026. A published schedule is not confirmed availability.
The exam objectives define what may be tested. A provider outline should show how the course teaches and practises that scope—and which preparation, labs, materials and voucher conditions sit outside the headline tuition.
Exam scope: The current SY0-701 blueprint has five domains: general security concepts; threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations; security architecture; security operations; and security program management and oversight.
Training scope: CompTIA’s exam blueprint is not a promise about any provider’s teaching hours, lab depth, instructor feedback or post-class support. Those are offer-level facts.
How to use it: Map each shortlist to all five domains, then ask what learners actually do. Reading about incident response, identity, hardening or risk is different from configuring, investigating and explaining those controls.

Evidence boundary: This comparison paraphrases public outlines; it does not republish a provider syllabus, verify a seat, or prove that every listed topic receives equal live instruction. A provider-issued proposal should identify the exact course version, schedule, delivery organization, inclusions and terms.
ONLC recommends Network+ training and certification plus 24 months in networking support or IT administration. Its outline also expects basic Windows administration, Linux command-line use and TCP/IP knowledge. These are this provider’s course expectations, not a statement that CompTIA requires Network+ certification to sit Security+.
The outline includes exam-preparation software but says voucher release requires proof of at least 85% in its practice software’s Certification mode. It also states a one-year exam deadline for the guarantee. Read the complete conditions before relying on a voucher or retake benefit.

Learnerside advice: plan for study outside class. If those foundations are unfamiliar, compare foundational instruction and guided practice before choosing an intensive exam-prep week. Ask when you receive the voucher and whether your intended exam date fits its conditions.
New Horizons lists five days of virtual instructor-led training at USD 2,495, with a separately priced USD 404 exam-voucher add-on. Its outline includes practice tests, labs with 180-day post-class access and 90-day recordings. Private groups are also offered, but public tuition is not a private-team quote.
The provider states no formal course prerequisites while recommending Network+ certification and at least two years of security-focused IT administration experience. Ask about preparation if you do not have that background. Retakes and rescheduling have separate conditions.
Read New Horizons’ Security+ outline and voucher add-on. The add-on is a provider-published offer, not a claim about CompTIA’s universal exam price; confirm checkout eligibility and total.
Learning Tree course 446 lists five intermediate-level days for SY0-701, USD 2,790 commercial live-instructor tuition, an exam voucher and hundreds of exam-prep questions. It recommends networking experience or practical networking knowledge and an information-assurance background. The page showed an Oct 19–23 virtual GTR session from 9am to 4:30pm Eastern without stating the calendar year. A separate government block displayed USD 2,590, but the page does not establish that a particular buyer qualifies for it.
Read Learning Tree’s Security+ course and published schedule. Confirm the year, seat, delivery format, commercial or government eligibility, voucher terms, taxes and complete employer total.
Global Knowledge course 3404 is a five-day SY0-701 preparation course listed at USD 2,970 for Virtual Classroom Live. Its outline includes an exam voucher and more than thirty assisted, applied, adaptive and capstone labs. The provider expects basic workstation knowledge plus A+ and Network+ certification or equivalent experience, including 2–3 years in networking. That makes it a poor fit to treat as a from-zero security course.
The downloadable course sheet and GTR search listed Nov 30–Dec 4, 2026 from 8:30am to 4:30pm Eastern, but the current course page also rendered “No available dates.” Another Dec 14–18 listing was marked full. Learnerside therefore does not place either date into the selectable finder. Inspect the dated course sheet · recheck the current course page.
NetCom’s current U.S. page identifies SY0-701 and exposes USD 2,675 for a five-day virtual instructor-led course, USD 595 for 40-hour e-learning and USD 1,949 under a government-pricing SKU. It separately exposes a USD 404 Security+ exam voucher. The live-course overview names a study guide, labs and a certified trainer; the page does not establish a dated session, seat, daily schedule, access terms, exact instructor, voucher conditions or complete buyer total.
A separate legacy SY0-601 URL still resolves, so keep the delivered exam code in the proposal. The government amount is not proof that a particular buyer qualifies, and the e-learning hour estimate is not an access-duration promise. No NetCom option enters the schedule matcher until a current calendar is verified.
