Plan certification training across your IT teams
Do not buy one certification package for the whole department. Define the missing capability by role, use official and no-cost preparation first, and pay only when a deadline, live feedback, guided labs, accessibility support, or team consistency solves a named problem. Keep exam costs, renewal, course prices, quote terms, and availability separate until each is verified.

The decision
Standardize the buying process, not one certification ladder
Approve a credential only after the seat, capability target, learner baseline, practical work, and completion evidence are clear. A junior administrator, a network engineer, and a security analyst do not need the same sequence. The role plans below are starting decisions, not a mandate to certify every employee. They retain unknown course pricing, seat availability, retakes, taxes, and bundle terms until a current quote resolves them.
Team plan · Systems administration
Baseline the fundamentals, then certify toward the hybrid estate
For junior administrators, the vendor-neutral foundation validates the troubleshooting and OS breadth the seat depends on. The advancement rung is the administrator-level cloud credential — the skill your on-premises-to-cloud migration actually needs.
CompTIA A+ two exams, $274 each — $548 total (fees as of 2026-09-09)
The entry baseline for junior seats — vendor-neutral hardware/OS/troubleshooting coverage.
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate exam $165 (fee as of 2026-09-29)
The advancement rung: administrator-level Azure. The realistic target for sysadmins in a Microsoft-heavy estate.
Team plan · Network team
Vendor-neutral entry, then the platform your network actually runs
Use Network+ when broad vendor-neutral networking foundations are the gap. Use CCNA when the seat must configure and troubleshoot Cisco networks. The professional tier is a deliberate decision for experienced seats — not a department-wide default.
CompTIA Network+ exam $399 (fee as of 2026-09-09) · 3-yr renewal $150
Vendor-neutral networking fundamentals when that capability is the gap.
Cisco CCNA exam $300 (fee as of 2026-09-29)
The associate-level Cisco route when configuration and troubleshooting on Cisco networks are part of the job.
CCNP Enterprise two exams, $700 total (fees as of 2026-08-24)
Professional tier for senior engineers — budget it per selected seat, not per team.
Team plan · Cloud team
One platform first — fund the platform you run, not both
Fundamentals certs are cheap alignment tools for adjacent staff; the administrator/associate tier is where cloud capability actually moves. Fund the platform your workloads run on — paying for both tracks per seat is how training budgets evaporate.
Microsoft Azure Fundamentals exam $99 (fee as of 2026-06-19)
Azure-side alignment rung — useful broadly, including for non-cloud staff who touch the platform.
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam $100 (fee as of 2026-08-23)
The AWS-side equivalent. Pick per seat based on your workloads — not both.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam $150 (fee as of 2026-08-23)
The AWS associate rung; the vendor recommends about a year of hands-on experience first.
Team plan · Security team
Reserve experience-gated credentials for ready seats
Security+ is a broad baseline when the seat needs security operations foundations or a named qualification requirement. CySA+ is the working-analyst rung. CISSP is experience-gated by the vendor — plan it only for seats that already carry the required years.
CompTIA Security+ exam $439 (fee as of 2026-09-09)
The broad security baseline when the role or an applicable qualification requirement calls for it.
CompTIA CySA+ exam $439 (fee as of 2026-08-23) · 3-yr renewal $150
The working-analyst advancement rung: detection and response depth.
CISSP - Certified Information Systems Security Professional exam $749 (fee as of 2026-07-05) · 3-yr renewal $405
The management-track flagship — experience-gated by ISC2, which changes who on your team it fits today.
Vendor requirement: full certification requires 5 years of relevant paid work experience — the vendor’s requirement, not our judgment. Budget this rung only for seats that already carry it. ISC2 states that earning a post-secondary degree (bachelors or masters) in computer science, information technology (IT) or related fields may satisfy up to one year of the required experience, as may one additional credential from the ISC2 approved list, leaving a minimum of 4 years.
Per-seat budgeting
Separate the known cost floor from the quote
Start with the required exam attempt and the fixed renewal cost where the vendor publishes one. Keep training, retakes, taxes, vouchers, labs, private-cohort terms, and current availability outside that floor until a source or quote resolves them. Where a cost shows “pending,” the vendor record did not state it and Learnerside does not estimate. Published list prices are planning context, not a promise of reseller, bundle, voucher, or team pricing.
Choosing training
Choose per-seat or cohort delivery before you request pricing
Separate who pays from how people learn. Employer funding does not make every seat a cohort, and a virtual course can be live or self-paced. Start with the capability target and the constraint, then choose the smallest delivery model that resolves it.
Self-study per seat
Use self-study when the person can protect practice time, suitable official objectives or no-cost preparation exist for the credential, and the work or lab environment is adequate. This is a seat-level decision: one person needing structure does not establish a department-wide training requirement.
Open-enrollment ILT or VILT for an individual constraint
Investigate an open-enrollment instructor-led or virtual instructor-led course when a seat needs live instruction, fixed pacing, timely feedback, or a supplied lab. Verify the exact delivery mode, dates and time zone, contact hours, lab access, voucher and courseware, recordings, and cancellation or reschedule terms. A published schedule does not establish seat availability.
Private cohort for a shared target
Investigate a private cohort only when multiple seats already share the same role or certification target, a group schedule constraint, and a defined internal practice or application plan. Before asking for a quote, define the target exam, role and readiness mix, time zones and working hours, required completion window, and internal lab or application plan.
Minimum group size, dates, instructor assignment, delivery platform or location, contact hours, lab access, vouchers and courseware, recordings, substitution and cancellation terms, price and fees, and availability are course- or quote-specific unknowns. Do not carry them over from a public course or another buyer’s quote.
Official and no-cost preparation remains the baseline each paid option has to beat. If a provider quotes a pass rate, salary effect, or outcome, ask which learners were counted, what time period was measured, and whether the result applies to this exact course and audience.
Funding and approval
Verify the written plan before calling anything reimbursable
Employer educational assistance can reduce the learner’s cost, but a federal tax exclusion is not a promised benefit or department budget. Verify employee eligibility, covered expense categories, preapproval timing, who pays first, required documentation, completion rules, repayment conditions, and tax treatment with the responsible HR, payroll, benefits, or procurement function. Do not assume that a course, exam, voucher, lab, book, or supply is covered merely because it may fit a broad education category.
Common questions
Common IT team certification questions
- How do I budget certifications for an IT department?
- Budget by seat and by credential. Start with the required exam attempt, add the published renewal cost where the vendor states one, and keep training, retakes, taxes, vouchers, labs, and team pricing as separate quote questions. Multiply only costs that are genuinely per learner or per required exam; public course listings do not establish a complete team total.
- Which certifications does my team actually need for DoD 8140 compliance?
- That depends on each seat’s assigned work role in your organization’s 8140 implementation, not on a generic list. Where a certification appears in public DoD baseline tables, the certification pages here say so with the source. Treat every mapping as planning context and confirm current status against the official DoD Cyber Exchange qualification tables before you commit budget — the tables change, and your contracting officer’s interpretation governs.
- Should I pay for training courses or just exam vouchers?
- Use self-study per seat when the person can protect practice time, suitable official objectives or no-cost preparation exist, and the work or lab environment is adequate. Investigate open-enrollment instructor-led or virtual instructor-led training when an individual seat needs live instruction, fixed pacing, timely feedback, or a supplied lab. Investigate a private cohort only when multiple seats already share the same target, schedule constraint, and internal application plan. Before a quote, define the target exam, role/readiness mix, time zones, completion window, and lab/application plan; treat group minimums, dates, instructor assignment, delivery platform or location, contact hours, labs, vouchers, recordings, terms, price, and availability as course- or quote-specific unknowns.
- Can I use tuition-assistance or tax levers to fund team certifications?
- Possibly, but the employer’s written plan controls eligibility and covered expenses. A federal tax exclusion is not a promised benefit or training budget and does not prove that an exam, course, voucher, lab, book, or supply is covered. Verify eligibility, preapproval, payment timing, documentation, completion rules, repayment conditions, and tax treatment with the employer’s responsible benefits or payroll function. This is planning context, not tax, legal, payroll, HR, or benefits advice.
- Is one certification ladder right for every team member?
- No. Use baseline credentials for junior seats only where foundations are the gap, one advancement rung for seats that run critical systems, and experience-gated credentials only where the vendor’s requirements are already met. Certifications can structure and assess study; they do not replace the hands-on work between rungs.

The costs and the evidence are the same across these; what changes is the decision each one is making. Pick the closer fit:
Build the IT training request — or ask for help
No training provider paid for anything on this page. Learnerside offers requirements-first training help and earns nothing from providers today. If you later request and approve sharing with a named provider, Learnerside may eventually receive a fee. Payment can never change certification advice, free-study guidance, provider facts, prices, comparisons, or ordering.
Optional: prepare an approval brief
The private builder separates the official exam-cost floor, dated course observations, employer-plan checks, and quote unknowns for A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, AWS SAA, or AZ-104. It collects no identity and sends nothing.
