SC-100: defend a security decision, not just an exam answer

Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert · exam SC-100.

Best fit
Experienced security practitioners who need to design across identity, operations, infrastructure, applications and data.
Consider instead
A task-specific identity or security-operations route; free architecture study without buying another badge.
Before paying
Passing SC-100 alone does not earn the Expert credential. Check your prerequisite record, exam date and language, regional price and lab entitlements.
No-contact next step

What earns the Expert credential—and who should slow down?

The credential page, checked October 2, requires SC-100 plus at least one named Associate credential: Identity and Access Administrator Associate, Security Operations Analyst Associate, or Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate. Passing the exam alone does not earn the full Expert award. Confirm your applicable credential record with Microsoft; this award requirement is not a verified exam-booking gate.

Microsoft recommends experience implementing or administering security across several areas, expert skills in at least one, and experience designing solutions with Microsoft security technologies. Recommended preparation is not a verified fixed employment-year requirement. A four-day class cannot create that experience.

If you cannot yet explain access decisions, operational evidence or recovery tradeoffs, start with a narrower work gap. Compare SC-300 identity and access learning with SC-200 security operations learning. These are different responsibilities, not instructions to buy both. For the newly named Cloud and AI Security Engineer branch, use the issuer’s current prerequisite links rather than assuming an older course’s exam-code examples still define eligibility.

SC-100 exam details and the announced October update

Microsoft announces an October 21, 2026 English exam update. The study guide checked October 2 foregrounds the future outline. Its four published ranges below are future-outline observations, not a complete pre-update blueprint or exact question counts. Verify the objectives and language applicable to your appointment; an announced date is not proof that the update has launched.

Security priorities and design principles · 20–25%

Translate business risks into a prioritized control strategy, rather than naming products first.

Operations, identity and compliance · 25–30%

Free study, four-day instruction or a design review?

Free official study and documentation

Choose when: You have relevant operational background and can structure your own architecture review.

Useful evidence: A requirements-to-controls decision record with reasons, owners and evidence—not only recognized product names.

Confirm first: Public reading is not licensed lab access, complete exam coverage or a pass prediction. Personal practice-assessment and sandbox access have not been tested.

Official four-day course outline

Choose when: You need structured cross-domain teaching and instructor questions.

Useful evidence: SC-100T00-A describes advanced security architecture across strategy, identity, operations, infrastructure, applications and data.

Confirm first: The credential page says no current courses while a separate four-day course outline is available. Confirm actual seller, delivery, course revision, contact hours, tuition, dates, accessibility, licenses, labs and voucher.

Feedback on a named architecture gap

Choose when: You can draft a design but need challenge on dependencies, residual risk or rollout.

Useful evidence: A reviewer’s objections and a revised, accountable decision record for a fictional system.

Confirm first: Exact instructor expertise, feedback deliverable, confidentiality, modality, time zone, total price and cancellation terms.

Use the training quote checklist

The course audience guidance strongly encourages prior security Associate learning but does not require it to attend. That attendance rule is separate from the Expert credential’s award requirements. No exact paid class or current provider authorization is verified here; check the named seller and delivering organization’s applicable Microsoft designation. A generic “gold partner” badge does not prove identical packages.

Exam cost, renewal and what to confirm before paying

Current regional SC-100 exam price and total ownership cost remain unknown. No exact region-to-price binding was established in the public issuer read. Confirm currency, taxes, attempts and retakes, any prerequisite exams, course tuition, product licenses, cloud usage and support. Unknown cost is not zero; no paid schedule, seat, voucher or booking is confirmed.

Microsoft’s renewal policy, checked October 2, requires annual renewal for eligible role-based holders through a free online assessment in the six months before expiration. Free renewal is not a free initial exam, prerequisite credential, course or security-product subscription. Check each credential’s status and applicable account obligations separately.

The study guide exposes practice and exam-interface resources. Use the current issuer navigation; an older direct practice-assessment URL has been withdrawn and is not offered here. Public documentation and our paper exercise need no training purchase; hands-on tenants, trials and data access have separate conditions.

Try a fictional architecture decision—with an accountable rubric

A fictional hybrid company has weak privileged access, fragmented incident telemetry, sensitive documents proposed for AI use and a legacy application with no accountable owner. Leadership also needs ransomware recovery. On paper, identify assets and trust boundaries; separate known requirements from assumptions; rank two threats by business impact; and map proposed identity, detection, data-protection and recovery controls to those requirements.

Write one decision record: alternatives considered, selected control and dependency, accountable owner, evidence of effectiveness, residual risk, license or access unknowns, rollout sequence and rollback. Do not prescribe a product just because its name appears in the syllabus. State who is authorized to accept the risk and what information is missing.

Change the requirement: the company cannot add a new license this quarter, and the application owner says a stronger access policy would break a service account. Revise the sequence and propose a controlled validation plan. Explain what can be tested safely, what must wait and which unresolved risk requires an owner’s decision; do not silently claim the system is secure.

Review rubric: can another reader trace each control to a requirement, identify its owner and evidence, distinguish detection from recovery, explain a rejected alternative and find the cost or access uncertainty? Ask them to challenge one assumption and record the revision. This original fictional learning sample is not performed security architecture, a Microsoft exam question, a passing-score prediction or permission to change a production system.

Difficulty depends on whether you can connect those decisions across domains. Recognizing service names is weaker evidence than defending tradeoffs. The optional concept questions below help find a study gap; they do not prove practical execution or satisfy the award’s prerequisite requirement.

Related roles, skills and salary limits

Security architecture combines requirements analysis, identity and access design, detection and response, infrastructure protection, application/data boundaries and risk communication. Those editorial connections can help an experienced security engineer, identity administrator or analyst choose further learning; they do not make every role an automatic next promotion.

A reviewed SC-100-holder salary or causal pay premium has not been established. Occupation-wide wages would describe varied experience and responsibilities, not what this credential pays you. Compare actual employer tasks, your performed work and local pay ranges rather than using the badge as a salary calculator.

Try twelve original security concepts—not an exam prediction

Retained original concept questions across four unweighted learning families. Their historical headings are not a verified pre-update exam blueprint. An answer is not performed work or a prerequisite credential.
