Is SC-300 the right next step?
SC-300 fits people responsible for identity and access in a Microsoft environment. Think about the work you need to do: giving the right person access, reviewing privileged permissions, integrating an application and explaining how access is removed. It is not general Azure administration or a shortcut from zero experience to a security job. Compare the task in your target role before buying a class.
The Microsoft credential page, checked October 1, 2026, describes an intermediate Entra-focused credential. It recommends familiarity with Azure, Microsoft 365, Active Directory Domain Services, PowerShell and KQL. Those are preparation recommendations, not a stated numeric work-experience or prior-credential gate. Confirm registration conditions, identity documents and accommodations separately. A course certificate is not this certification.
If your immediate gap is basic cloud vocabulary or broad Azure operations, compare the existing Microsoft guides first. SC-300 is more useful when identity work is actually in scope; it is not automatically the next purchase after a fundamentals exam.
Choose the exam date and language before courseware
On October 1, Microsoft's credential page announced an English exam update dated October 28, 2026. This is a dated announcement, not evidence that the revised exam has launched or that an appointment is available. If that date has passed when you read this, check the issuer again; Learnerside has not silently refreshed the observation.
The linked SC-300 study guide already labels its detailed outline "as of October 28, 2026." In that future outline, authentication/access management is 25-30% in the summary but 20-25% in its detailed heading. We did not verify an unambiguous pre-change weighting. Do not treat either value as today's confirmed exam weight. The concept check below therefore uses four task families without percentages or a weighted readiness score; it is not complete objective coverage.
These are paraphrased practice areas from Microsoft's credential overview, not complete proprietary objectives:
| Task family | A useful practice output |
|---|
| User identities | A documented joiner/mover/leaver process, with ownership and access removal. |
| Authentication and access | A policy test plan that explains allowed, challenged and blocked access. |
| Workload identities | An application identity design with narrowly scoped permissions and no committed secrets. |
| Identity governance | A privileged-access and review process with an owner, review trigger and audit evidence. |
Use the official guide for the full applicable outline. Ask a training seller which exam date, language and courseware edition it supports; a translated exam need not change on the English date. The ten optional Learnerside concept questions are original educational scenarios, not Microsoft exam questions, a pass prediction or proof you can safely administer a production tenant.
Exam logistics, cost and renewal
Microsoft's October 1 credential observation gives 100 minutes for the assessment, proctored, with possible interactive components. This is assessment time, not total appointment time or a guaranteed question count. Check the actual appointment, delivery mode, local time zone and accommodation arrangements before paying.
The exam price depends on the country or region where it is proctored. No current regional exam amount is verified here. Check Microsoft's scheduling flow without mistaking exam fees for tuition; taxes, retakes, preparation and lab licensing may be separate. Missing cost is unknown, not zero. Prefer a personal Microsoft account for durable credential records, following the issuer's account guidance, rather than assuming a work account survives leaving an employer.
The Microsoft renewal guidance, checked October 1, describes annual role-based renewal through a free online assessment. An eligible holder can renew in the six months before expiry. This is not a free initial exam, automatic renewal or a paid-course requirement. Confirm your own eligibility and expiry in your Learn profile.
Free study versus the four-day SC-300 course
Microsoft Learn provides self-directed study linked from the official course and the credential's practice assessment and exam sandbox. Documentation and a fictional identity-design exercise are optional preparation choices. Reading and answering concepts do not replace hands-on practice. Entra features and tenant labs can require licenses or a trial with terms; no free lab entitlement is promised here.
The issuer lists SC-300T00-A, Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator, as a four-day course on October 1. Its outline connects identity administration, secure application access, hybrid identity, governance and troubleshooting. Four course days are not a preparation-time estimate or a promise of readiness.
Paid instruction can be worthwhile for feedback on policy decisions, supported lab troubleshooting, accessible materials or a workable schedule. Compare it against the actual gap, not the credential logo. For the selected offering, ask for:
- Exact course code/edition and mapping to the exam on your planned date.
- Delivery format, meeting dates/times/time zone, contact hours and pace.
- Tenant access, required licenses, lab reset/support, accessibility and recordings.
- Per-learner tuition/currency, taxes, voucher/retake inclusion and cancellation terms.
No provider tuition, class date, seat or package inclusion is verified for this guide. Follow Microsoft's provider-search link from the official course and verify the exact delivery entity and current designation. A reseller's general partner badge does not prove SC-300 authorization or identical teaching, labs and support. We have not awarded a provider badge here.
An optional identity work sample
Use fictional accounts and a diagram, not customer data or a production tenant. A small company needs to onboard a contractor to one application and remove access after 30 days. Draft a one-page plan: identities, least-privilege permissions, an authentication policy test matrix, application identity choice, privileged-change approval, review owner and offboarding evidence. State what you cannot test without a licensed isolated lab. Explain how you would avoid locking out legitimate administrators and how a reviewer could challenge your assumptions.
If those decisions are unfamiliar, foundations and feedback may be more useful than immediate exam preparation. If the plan is credible but implementation is the gap, compare lab access and instructor support. A classroom date alone is not a reason to rush past the announced exam change.
Roles, skills and salary: what the evidence does and does not show
Identity administration and security engineering are relevant work contexts in Microsoft's overview. Application access, troubleshooting and governance are transferable task skills; these are not guaranteed job titles or proof every security analyst needs SC-300. Compare an employer's actual duties and experience requirements.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics information security analyst profile, checked October 1, reports U.S. median annual pay of USD 129,180 in May 2025 for that occupation. Some security-focused identity duties overlap; this is not a mapping of all identity administrators. It is not SC-300-holder salary, starting pay, a local offer or evidence certification causes a raise. No credential-specific salary figure is verified. Role scope, geography and experience matter more than treating one national median as an expected offer.
A useful next action without contact
Choose your work task, preparation gap, intended exam date/language and preferred study format. Draft an employer-readable plan with regional exam cost and tuition marked unknown until verified, or ask a short timing/format question. Research is ungated and exact budget is not required. A request authorizes a Learnerside reply, not provider contact; sharing requires separate consent naming the recipient. Learnerside is independent of Microsoft. Dated observations are not current quotes, booking promises or employment guarantees.
