Decide by the work and your exam date
Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate is for people who investigate alerts, respond to incidents and hunt for threats with Microsoft security tools. It is an intermediate, operational credential. Choose it when you need to work across Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Sentinel and related services, not merely to learn security vocabulary. A certificate is not proof that you can run an incident response alone.
Microsoft identifies October 21, 2026 as the English SC-200 exam-update date. The study guide publishes objectives labeled for that date, but its change log is not a complete copy of the earlier objectives. For a test before October 21, confirm the applicable objectives through Microsoft's exam materials and your booking details; do not assume the October objectives were already scored. For a later test, match any course, practice bank and labs to the updated guide. Microsoft says localized exams generally follow the English update by about eight weeks, but timing can vary. Verify your exam language and version in the booking flow instead of assuming the English date applies to every language.
- Already doing SOC work: Map the official objectives to incidents you can investigate, Kusto Query Language (KQL) queries you can explain, and detection or automation changes you can make safely. Choose instruction and practice support for your tasks, feedback needs and schedule.
- New to security operations: SC-900 is an optional foundation for security concepts. Compare foundational support, instruction and permitted practice for the work you need. SC-900 is not a formal SC-200 admission requirement.
- Employer-funded or team learner: Confirm tool access, lab licenses, exam timing and whether the class uses the October guide. A four-day course can structure practice, but attendance alone does not establish incident-response competence.
What the October 21 English exam map describes
Microsoft's SC-200 study guide groups the October 21, 2026 English objectives into three weighted areas. This remains a future map at the October 7 observation; the full earlier blueprint was not inspected. These are published ranges, not exact question counts or a complete course syllabus.
| October 21 English skill area | Published range | Practical preparation question |
|---|
| Manage a security operations environment | 40-45% | Can you configure useful data ingestion, detections, access and automation without drowning analysts in noise? |
| Respond to security incidents | 35-40% | Can you investigate evidence across Defender XDR and Sentinel, contain a threat safely and document a defensible response? |
| Perform threat hunting | 20-25% | Can you write and interpret KQL, test a hypothesis and distinguish a lead from a confirmed incident? |
The October-dated guide lists detailed tasks within those groups, including Sentinel platform and AI-assisted investigation examples. Read the actual dated objectives for your test window; a vendor's generic list of Defender and Sentinel products is not an objective-to-lab map. The exam may include interactive components according to the credential page. Practice the workflow, not just a list of product names.
Readiness, difficulty and cost
Microsoft's candidate profile expects familiarity with security operations, Microsoft 365 and Azure, and KQL-based hunting. It is a description of the intended learner, not a stated requirement to hold SC-900 or another certification first. An optional readiness exercise in an authorized lab: ingest sample security events, write a KQL query to triage an alert, investigate its entity timeline, decide whether to escalate or contain, and explain the evidence and false-positive risk. Never test incident actions on a production tenant without permission. This is Learnerside's exercise, not an exam question.
Microsoft lists 100 minutes for the proctored assessment and links a free Practice Assessment and exam sandbox. The study guide links a 700-or-greater passing-score policy; this is a scaled exam threshold, not a 70% pass rate or a prediction of your chance of passing. The credential page displays a country/region-dependent exam price at booking; a single USD figure is not a reliable global quote. Check your regional checkout, taxes, retake rules and any employer voucher before committing. Lab licenses and tuition are separate costs.
You can use the official study guide, linked self-paced Microsoft Learn material, free Practice Assessment and sandbox. Some hands-on Microsoft security features require a suitable tenant, permissions or paid licensing; do not assume a free module gives you unrestricted product access. Ask your employer whether a non-production lab and relevant licenses already exist.
Does the four-day official course fit?
Microsoft lists SC-200T00-A, a four-day course on investigating, responding to and hunting for threats with Sentinel, Defender XDR and Defender for Cloud. Its public outline is a course description, not a guarantee that a particular provider offers a current seat, lab, voucher, recording or price. If you need guided exercises, ask the seller for a dated syllabus mapped to the October 21 objectives, the exact delivery organization and any current Microsoft training designation, dates and time zone, learner-performed labs, tenant/license access, instructor feedback, recordings, cancellation terms, and the total per-learner price. Verify the designation with Microsoft for the named entity; a badge alone is not enough.
An employer proposal should name the real incident or detection task the training will improve, the required tenant access and a post-course practice assignment. If you mainly need KQL practice or a refresher on one Defender workflow, targeted self-study may be better than buying the full course.
Roles, salary claims and renewal
This credential aligns with security operations analyst work: triage, incident response, detection engineering and threat hunting. It does not guarantee a SOC job, promotion or salary premium. Occupation-level wage statistics include people with many backgrounds and cannot isolate SC-200 holders; this page does not invent a certification salary.
Microsoft lists 12-month renewal for this associate certification. Its renewal page says holders can take a free online renewal assessment in the six months before expiration. Confirm your own renewal window and current terms in Microsoft Learn. Renewal is different from buying another four-day class or retaking the original exam.
Next action
You can ask about training immediately. Checking your exam date and language, public study and an authorized-lab exercise are optional planning tools. You can describe your schedule and format or draft an employer brief. Sending a request does not authorize Learnerside to share your details with a provider; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
