Quick verdict
SC-900 is a beginner credential for understanding security, compliance, and identity across Microsoft cloud services. It can help a business stakeholder, student, or new IT professional speak accurately about Microsoft Entra, security tools, and Microsoft Purview. It is not a security-operations job qualification, proof of hands-on administration, or a salary lever. Compare public study, structured instruction and support for the product concepts you need. You can ask about training immediately; studying first is optional.
Version watch: Microsoft says the English exam will update on October 21, 2026. This page was checked September 29, 2026. The SC-900 study guide already displays skills for the October update and a change log. If your exam or course is on either side of that date, confirm the language, test date, current objectives, and courseware revision before paying. Other language versions may update later; do not assume the English date applies to your appointment.
Is SC-900 the right starting point?
- Choose it if your work or target employer uses Microsoft 365 or Azure and you need to explain how identities, access, security monitoring, and compliance services fit together.
- Consider foundational support if accounts, tenants, shared responsibility, and Microsoft 365 versus Azure are unfamiliar. Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is an adjacent foundation, not a formal SC-900 prerequisite.
- Choose a deeper path later if your goal is to investigate incidents, configure production controls, or own compliance operations. SC-900 introduces those product families; it does not demonstrate those job tasks.
Microsoft identifies business stakeholders, new or existing IT professionals, and students as audiences. It recommends familiarity with Azure and Microsoft 365. The current credential page does not list a prior certificate or work-experience requirement for booking; that is a scoped observation, not a promise that preparation is unnecessary. What the October 21 English exam map describes
Microsoft's SC-900 study guide publishes these four domain-weight ranges in its October 21 skills section. This is a future map at the October 7 Pacific check; the full earlier blueprint was not inspected. The ranges are not a guaranteed mix of questions, and the full official guide - not this summary - controls task-level preparation.
| October 21 English domain | Published range | Practical study question |
|---|
| Security, compliance, and identity concepts | 10-15% | Can you distinguish authentication, authorization, shared responsibility, and Zero Trust in a short workplace example? |
| Microsoft Entra capabilities | 25-30% | Can you explain identities, multifactor authentication, Conditional Access, roles, and access reviews without treating each as the same control? |
| Microsoft security solutions | 35-40% | Can you identify what Azure infrastructure protection, Defender, and Sentinel each do, and where the boundaries between them sit? |
| Microsoft compliance solutions | 20-25% | Can you explain the jobs of Purview labels, data-loss prevention, retention, audit, and the Service Trust Portal? |
The study questions are Learnerside prompts, not Microsoft exam questions or a reproduced course outline. Review the study guide's change log before an October 21 or later English-language appointment. Source checked September 29, 2026.
How difficult is it?
The challenge is breadth and product boundaries, not a published experience gate. A learner may recognize general security terms yet still confuse Microsoft Entra with Defender or Purview, or mistake Sentinel for every Defender capability. An optional way to explore that distinction is drawing a small map of an employee sign-in, a detected threat, and a document-retention request: name the responsible product family and what evidence you would check. If you cannot explain the map, more practice is more useful than assigning the exam a number.
Microsoft calls the credential beginner-level and recommends Azure and Microsoft 365 familiarity. Neither the label nor completing a course predicts your exam result. The official free practice assessment can reveal gaps, but repeated questions are not a pass guarantee.
Free study or instructor-led training?
Use the official study guide, its linked self-paced Microsoft Learn resources, and the free practice assessment if that format fits your learning. That route fits learners who can build a consistent study schedule and check unfamiliar Microsoft product terms independently. Avoid enabling paid cloud services just to read the documentation.
Microsoft's SC-900T00-A course is a one-day introductory course, not a promise that one day is enough to prepare for the exam. Microsoft explicitly says students must have general networking/cloud understanding, general IT knowledge or experience, and Azure/Microsoft 365 understanding before attending. These course attendance requirements are separate from exam eligibility or a personal admission decision. A live class may be worthwhile when instructor questions, a fixed employer schedule, team consistency, or guided explanation of product boundaries is the missing piece.
No specific provider class, seat, tuition, lab entitlement, recording, or voucher inclusion is verified on this page. Before buying, request the exact SC-900T00-A courseware revision for your exam date, instructor and delivery entity, time zone and contact hours, whether access is view-only or hands-on, what is included in the total, and cancellation terms. A Microsoft course page establishes the official course identity, not a provider's current availability or authorization.
Exam logistics and cost boundaries
Microsoft lists a 45-minute proctored SC-900 assessment and says the price varies with the country or region of proctoring. Confirm the payable amount, taxes, accommodations, and retake terms at booking rather than treating a training quote as the exam price. Credential page, checked September 29, 2026.
Microsoft says Fundamentals certifications do not expire. That is different from the exam objectives remaining unchanged; keep learning as the services evolve. Microsoft renewal policy, checked September 29, 2026.
Related work and salary context
SC-900 introduces concepts used in identity administration, security operations, compliance work, and IT support. Those are task overlaps, not a claim that the credential qualifies someone for those roles. Employer requirements and practical experience vary. An occupation-level wage statistic would describe workers across experience and credentials; it would not establish a salary for SC-900 holders or a raise caused by this exam. No certification-specific pay figure is asserted here.
Next action
You can ask about training immediately. Public study, practice assessments and a product-boundary exercise are optional planning tools. You can describe your desired schedule and format or prepare an employer approval brief. A request does not authorize sharing your information with a provider; separate consent naming a recipient is required.
