Career guide · IT support & help desk
Help people solve computer problems. Build a repeatable way to investigate, communicate and document a fix, then choose training for the gaps you actually have.
A+ and CCST IT Support are options, not universal hiring requirements. Start with the responsibilities in a real job description and the work you can demonstrate.
Day-to-day work
User support combines technical investigation with helping people. Typical duties include:
Paraphrased from BLS duties and O*NET tasks; checked 2026-10-15.
Support may be onsite, remote or involve travel. Some employers need evening or weekend coverage. Ask about shifts, escalation support, supported systems and the balance between user contact and technical work before deciding whether a vacancy fits.
Build evidence of your work
O*NET identifies listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking alongside technical work. The practice ideas below are Learnerside suggestions using invented cases, not employer requirements or a readiness test.

Useful evidence: A symptom log, test results and a reason for the next check.
Ask clarifying questions, then explain the proposed step to a nontechnical user.
Useful evidence: A clear user update with an honest next action.
Write a short support ticket that another technician could continue.
Useful evidence: The issue, impact, checks, outcome and escalation context.
Explain a setup or recovery procedure using a device or environment you may safely operate.
Useful evidence: A checklist, permission boundary and way to reverse a failed change.
Distinguish a forgotten password from missing permission or a suspicious sign-in.
Useful evidence: A safe escalation route without collecting anyone’s password.
Use documentation to investigate an unfamiliar issue and decide when to ask for help.
Useful evidence: A source, remaining unknowns and a useful handover.

Dated occupation context
BLS reports this occupation median, which divides workers into two equal groups by earnings. It is not starting pay, a remote-work rate, A+ holder earnings or an increase caused by certification. Location, industry, responsibilities and experience affect offers.
BLS projects 3% employment decline for computer user support specialists from 2025 to 2035. Replacement needs can still create openings. Read the separate occupation row and outlook discussion; a national projection does not predict your local job search.
Wage period and projection window are different. Existing occupation pay record reused; BLS checked 2026-10-15. Compare actual local vacancies before committing to training.
Education requirements vary. BLS says some user-support roles accept computer knowledge without a college degree; other employers ask for more education or product certifications. Check the vacancy rather than treating one route as mandatory.
A personal project or fictional ticket can help explain your reasoning. It does not establish professional experience, permission to administer workplace systems or a guaranteed interview.

Self-paced: useful when you need flexible repetition; check whether it supplies operated practice or feedback.
