Tech+: build IT foundations before deciding whether you need an exam

Use Tech+ to explore basic computing, software, data and security. If you already perform those tasks, compare the A+ support scope before paying for another introductory course or badge.

Best fit
People new to IT concepts, career exploration or technical conversations who want a structured foundation.
Consider instead
If your goal is a specific support role, compare its actual responsibilities and A+ preparation. Tech+ is not a compulsory first badge or proof that you are job-ready.
Before paying
Standard and CE credential variants have different validity. Compare course access, optional exam package, voucher conditions, labs and your final invoice.

Exam scope, background and credential variants

CompTIA currently lists V6, launched July 16, 2024: maximum 70 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, passing score 650 on a scale of 900, in English and Japanese. These are listed exam facts; personal booking and accommodations were not tested.

CompTIA lists no prior experience necessary under recommended experience. That is background advice, not a verified waiver of personal age, identity, agreement or booking conditions. Tech+ is an introduction to basic IT concepts; it is not a compulsory credential before A+.

Choose the exact credential: Standard FC0-U71 does not expire. The issuer separately lists FC0-U71-CE with five-year validity. Confirm which credential and voucher you are purchasing; this page does not establish the CE variant’s renewal route, fee or personal eligibility. A provider’s general “good for life” statement does not describe both variants.

  • Tech concepts and terminology: 13%
  • Infrastructure: 24%
  • Applications and software: 18%
  • Software development concepts: 13%
  • Data and database fundamentals: 13%
  • Security: 19%

Weights describe exam coverage, not mastery, pass probability or study duration. Programming and databases here are introductory concepts, not proof of professional development or database administration.

Evidence and entry requirements

Useful evidence: The issuer page lists six objective families, current exam facts and learning-product families.

ONLC CompTIA Tech+ Certification Course (XTPF71)

Choose when: You want scheduled instruction and opportunities to ask questions while learning basic IT.

Observed 2026-10-06 provider list tuition: USD2,495. Live instructor-led; five-day listing. Exam-package terms, taxes, personal access and your final invoice require confirmation.

Evidence and entry requirements

Useful evidence: Public XTPF71 outline covers basic computing and troubleshooting, hardware and networks, software, programming concepts, databases, backups and security. Five-day listing is not verified live contact hours or personal study effort. The provider program advertises a voucher for public instructor-led training; confirm exact credential and release conditions. Selected lab tasks, permitted access, feedback, schedule, seats, taxes, cancellation and final invoice remain unverified. The page includes Virginia employer-sponsorship and New Hampshire approval warnings; confirm applicability to the selected offer. Provider-stated authorization is not independently verified.

Confirm first: No formal course prerequisites stated; basic IT-system and network understanding is helpful. Course advice is separate from exam eligibility and personal admission.

ONLC CompTIA On-Demand: Tech+ Course (GTPF71)

Choose when: You prefer flexible independent study and can use the purchased access period.

Observed 2026-10-06 provider list tuition: USD495. Self-paced; 360-day access from purchase. Exam-package terms, taxes, personal access and your final invoice require confirmation.

Evidence and entry requirements

Useful evidence: Public GTPF71 outline covers basic computing, privacy and security, networking, applications and operating systems, hardware, databases and introductory coding. Provider lists videos, demonstrations, lab exercises, quizzes and assessments; learner-operated access and feedback were not tested. Optional USD150 Exam Pak is additional and available only with the course purchase. Provider releases its voucher after at least 85% on its included assessment and submitted proof; stated exam-pass terms require the exam within one year of course completion. This threshold is not a Learnerside readiness verdict or pass promise. Confirm taxes, support, retake and guarantee terms, and applicability of the Virginia employer-sponsorship/New Hampshire approval warnings. No learner information was sent.

Confirm first: Provider names basic computer literacy, internet skills and interest in technology; basic math and common office-application familiarity are helpful. Personal admission and practice access require confirmation.

Inspect the named self-paced course

ONLC describes its training as CompTIA-authorized. This guide verifies the named public offers and outlines; it does not independently establish a current partner relationship, booking or personal entitlement.

Compare A+ for IT support work. Choose the skills you need first; buying both exams is not an assumed prerequisite ladder.

Separate tuition, optional exam packages and credential rules

The self-paced base course lists USD495. Its optional USD150 Exam Pak makes those two listed items USD645 before applicable taxes or other extras. That is a package subtotal, not an official exam fee, final invoice or total ownership budget. A current direct issuer exam quote was not verified here.

Voucher conditions matter: ONLC says the optional Exam Pak voucher is released after at least 85% on its included assessment and proof sent to the provider. It says the authorized exam must be taken within one year of course completion for its exam-pass terms. This provider threshold is not Learnerside’s readiness score or a promise of passing. No proof or learner information was sent.

Confirm the standard FC0-U71 or CE variant, voucher validity and any retake conditions before purchasing. Standard no-expiration rules do not make the five-year CE variant free to renew. The live-course program’s stated voucher value is not used here as a verified current issuer exam price.

Associated work and occupational pay context

Basic troubleshooting, networking, cloud and software concepts can help you understand support tasks. These introductory skills do not establish independent repair, security administration or software-testing competence.

BLS Computer User Support Specialists, SOC 15-1232: USD61,860 median annual pay, United States, May 2025. Broad occupation median, not Tech+ holder earnings, an entry-level offer or a credential salary premium. Education, experience, location and employer requirements vary. No Tech+-specific hiring demand or pay premium is established by this figure.

Try an original fictional work sample

A fictional small office needs to choose a laptop, connect a printer and keep a spreadsheet of equipment. Explain the hardware and software needs, a basic network diagram, backup versus storage, and sensible access and password practices. Identify which decisions require more information.

Changed condition: the printer stops working after a network change. Describe observations that distinguish power, connectivity and device-setting problems before changing anything. Explain who may authorize a change and how you would restore the prior configuration.

Review rubric: clear basic concepts, observations before changes, safe access handling and a justified next step. This original private exercise is not an exam question, scored readiness test or hiring prediction. Use invented names and data; do not submit workplace information.
