Can Your Employer Pay for IT Certification? Reimbursement Checklist
Learn when an employer may pay for IT certification, what Section 127 does and does not guarantee, and how to build a manager-ready request.
Build an employer-ready requestPossibly — but only if your employer offers an educational-assistance benefit and its written rules cover the exact expense. Start by confirming that the certification fits the work. Then ask for the smallest useful purchase: often protected study time and an exam voucher after free preparation, not an expensive course by default.

The decision in 60 seconds
- Ask now when the certification matches current or planned work, you have checked the free route, and a course, voucher, lab, or protected schedule solves a specific constraint.
- Ask for less when official free study is sufficient. A voucher, lab access, or study time may be the defensible request instead of a full course.
- Wait when the certification is still uncertain, the required foundations are missing, or the employer's preapproval rules are unknown.
What the federal rule actually means
Section 127 defines educational assistance to include tuition, fees and similar expenses, books, supplies, equipment, and employer-provided courses. The employer's written plan may cover only some categories. A certification course, exam voucher, lab, book, or supply is not automatically covered; ask the plan administrator about the exact purchase before paying.
For 2026, up to $5,250 of qualifying educational assistance may be excluded from wages under a qualifying plan. This is a federal tax exclusion ceiling, not a guaranteed employee benefit or employer training budget. Assistance above the ceiling is generally wages unless another exclusion applies. Learnerside does not provide tax, legal, payroll, HR, or benefits advice.
Treat $5,250 as a federal tax-exclusion ceiling, not money the company owes you. Ask what benefit exists, how much remains, and which purchases the plan will approve.
Before you spend anything
Ask HR, benefits, or your manager for the written educational-assistance plan. Confirm eligibility, covered expense categories, preapproval timing, who pays first, required documents, the remaining annual benefit, and any completion, grade, retention, or repayment conditions before you buy.
Use this checklist:
1. Get the current written plan or reimbursement policy.
2. Confirm that you are eligible and that the exact course, exam, voucher, lab, book, or supply can be covered.
3. Confirm whether approval must happen before registration or payment.
4. Confirm whether the employer pays directly or reimburses you later.
5. Confirm the documentation and completion evidence required.
6. Confirm the remaining annual benefit and any grade, retention, or repayment conditions.
7. Ask the employer's responsible HR, benefits, payroll, or tax function how the payment will be treated.
Build the smallest sensible request
Start with official free preparation. Request paid structure only when you can name the constraint it solves: instructor feedback, guided labs, a fixed deadline, accessibility support, cohort pacing, or consistent delivery for a team.
A useful request separates:
- Known fixed costs: required exam attempts and any fixed published renewal fee.
- Dated training observations: a provider's published amount, format, unit, inclusions, and observation date.
- Unknown current costs: quote, taxes, availability, team pricing, voucher or lab inclusion, cancellation terms, retakes, and schedule.
Learnerside's approval builder does this for A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, and AZ-104. It keeps your choices in the browser and sends nothing automatically.
A manager-request template
I am requesting approval for [certification or capability] because it supports [current or planned work]. I will begin with the official free preparation and complete [practical work or lab]. Paid [course, voucher, lab, or protected study time] would address [specific constraint]. The known cost floor is [exam and other fixed cost]; the current quote, availability, inclusions, and reimbursement treatment still need confirmation. Please confirm the written plan, preapproval process, covered expense categories, payment method, required documentation, and any completion or repayment conditions.
Prepare the approval brief
Use the manager-ready tool to choose one of the five flagship certifications, keep free study visible, separate known costs from quote questions, and copy or print the result. It asks for no identity and does not contact an employer or training provider.

Limits
Reviewed against current IRS Publication 15-B, IRS Fact Sheet 2026-10, and 26 U.S.C. §127. This page explains a planning decision; it is not financial advice, tax advice, legal advice, payroll guidance, HR advice, or benefits advice and does not guarantee funding. Your employer decides whether it offers a plan and how its rules apply to a specific purchase.
