AZ-802: prepare to operate and recover Windows Server

Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.

Best fit
Administrators with Windows Server experience who need on-premises and hybrid operating skills.
Consider instead
Foundational server and networking practice first; AZ-104 when the actual gap is broader Azure administration.
Before paying
Confirm the current AZ-802 requirement, regional checkout, practice licenses and the exact course revision. Old AZ-800/AZ-801 listings are not a current booking plan.
No-contact next step
Choose a preparation route and write a recovery plan for the fictional workload below—without contact or a training purchase.

Who fits—and is AZ-802 the current exam?

The credential page, checked October 2, names AZ-802 as the required exam and notes an English update on January 21, 2026. Historical AZ-800/AZ-801 observations remain history; they do not establish current equivalence, award credit or booking eligibility. Confirm your own record with Microsoft before paying for a legacy course.

Microsoft recommends several years of Windows Server experience. That is preparation guidance, not a verified fixed work-experience or prior-certification booking gate. If AD DS, DNS, permissions and recovery are still unfamiliar, practise those foundations before buying compressed instruction. Course attendance does not create operating experience.

For an Azure-resource administration gap, compare AZ-104. For Entra identity governance rather than Windows Server operations, compare SC-300. Different responsibilities do not require buying every credential.

AZ-802 exam objectives and course outline

The exam page and study guide checked October 2 describe seven weighted families. These paraphrases help compare preparation; ranges are not question counts or a learner’s chance of passing. The credential’s broader task list is not a second weighted blueprint.

AD DS · 20–25%

Domain and identity administration, with recovery and access dependencies.

Hybrid Windows Server instances · 10–15%

Operate servers across local and Azure-connected environments.

Virtual machines · 10–15%

Configure and operate virtualization for the required workload.

Networking · 10–15%

Trace connectivity and name-resolution dependencies.

Storage and file services · 15–20%

Match capacity, permissions and recovery to the workload.

Server security · 10–15%

Explain hardening, access and protection choices.

Monitoring and troubleshooting · 15–20%

Use evidence to isolate a fault and verify recovery.

The study guide includes detailed tasks across identity, virtualization, networking, storage, security and operational evidence. Ask a trainer to map exercises to the current objectives rather than simply listing product names. Use the full issuer outline for your appointment language and date.

Free study, a five-day course or focused practice?

Free official reading and a paper exercise

Choose when: You have server background and can identify a specific knowledge gap.

Useful evidence: An explainable workload diagram, dependency checks and a recovery plan using the current study guide.

Confirm first: Public reading is not a complete lab subscription, free Azure provisioning or an exam pass. Account-specific practice access has not been tested.

Official five-day course outline

Choose when: You need structured teaching across identity, virtual machines, networking, storage and security.

Useful evidence: AZ-802T00-A Administer Windows Server describes these operating tasks, with monitoring and troubleshooting.

Confirm first: The credential collection says no current courses, but this separate outline exists. Confirm seller, revision, time zone, contact hours, accessibility, labs, recordings, voucher, tuition and cancellation.

Targeted feedback on an operating gap

Choose when: You can explain a plan but need feedback on restore, dependencies or evidence.

Useful evidence: A revised fictional runbook and a clearly scoped authorised-lab exercise, not only a completion certificate.

Confirm first: Trainer expertise, lab isolation, licenses, data handling, feedback deliverable, access period and total price.

Use the quote checklist

The course page, checked October 2, gives five days and expects server-administration familiarity. Its related-credential label omits “Hybrid”, while the credential and exam pages retain that word. We preserve that naming mismatch rather than infer a rebrand. The outline is not a verified class, seat or authorised provider offer; confirm the exact seller and delivering organisation’s applicable Microsoft designation, not a generic “gold partner” claim.

Exam cost, appointment details and renewal

Current regional AZ-802 price and total ownership cost remain unknown. The issuer’s exam page bases price on the proctoring region; taxes, retakes, tuition, Windows licenses and cloud use may be separate. No paid class date, available seat or included voucher is verified here. Missing cost is not zero.

The exam page lists English and no announced retirement. Exact assessment duration, total appointment time and fixed question count are unverified here. Confirm regional delivery, ID, accessibility, language and retake terms through current issuer scheduling guidance; do not substitute another Microsoft exam’s duration.

Microsoft’s policy, checked October 2, describes annual role-based renewal through a free assessment for eligible holders in the six months before expiry. Passing extends the credential one year from expiry. That is not a free initial exam, course, Windows license or Azure subscription. Check your own profile and deadlines.

Try an original recovery decision—with a review rubric

A fictional wholesaler runs a domain-dependent file service on virtual machines, connects some servers to Azure and has an overnight maintenance window. A change breaks user access. Leadership asks for recovery without losing new files; the available backup’s restore result is unknown.

On paper, map identities, DNS, network paths, virtual-machine state, storage permissions and backups. Separate observed symptoms from hypotheses. Choose a low-risk evidence check before a destructive restore; name the authorised operator, expected result, rollback and escalation trigger. Define which data can be lost and how long the service can be unavailable, then ask the business owner to approve those requirements.

Change the requirement: cloud access is temporarily unavailable and the storage owner rejects a full rollback because orders arrived after the backup. Revise the sequence, identify the recovery options that need testing and explain what must remain unresolved. Never assume a VM restart proves application or identity recovery.

Review rubric: can another reader trace the symptom to a dependency, find the evidence needed to reject a hypothesis, identify the owner and rollback, and explain how restored access and data consistency will be checked? Record one objection and revise the plan. This original fictional sample needs no account; it is not performed administration, a Microsoft exam question, a pass prediction or permission to change a production system.

Difficulty depends on your ability to diagnose across dependencies, not only recognise service names. The optional original concept questions below expose learning gaps; neither a correct answer nor this paper plan demonstrates a completed restore.

Related jobs, skills and salary context

Relevant work includes systems administration, hybrid server operations and infrastructure support. Identity, scripting, virtualization, network troubleshooting, storage permissions and recovery are task associations, not a guarantee of hiring eligibility.

The U.S. BLS occupation page, checked October 2, reports a $99,130 median annual wage in May 2025 for network and computer systems administrators. It covers different technologies and experience levels—not AZ-802 holders, an entry offer or a causal certification premium. Compare local job requirements and evidence of your actual work.
