Who it fits

The decision in brief

Choose AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate if your work is to operate and recover AWS workloads, not primarily to design new architectures or write applications. The current exam is SOA-C03. AWS renamed the credential from SysOps Administrator - Associate when SOA-C03 replaced SOA-C02 in September 2025. An older SysOps course or practice bank is not automatically current SOA-C03 preparation. Ask which guide revision a seller follows before buying.

  • Already operating AWS systems: Use the SOA-C03 exam guide to find the tasks you cannot yet demonstrate, then choose focused practice or instruction for those gaps.
  • New to AWS operations: Optional foundational support can cover monitoring, access control, backup recovery and network diagnosis in a cost-controlled environment. AWS suggests Cloud Practitioner as broad orientation for people without IT experience; it does not replace operations practice.
  • Choosing between AWS tracks: Solutions Architect Associate emphasizes architecture decisions; Developer Associate emphasizes building and maintaining applications. CloudOps is the closer fit when your job is deployment, monitoring, incident response and continuity.

If you need Korean or Simplified Chinese, check the appointment before buying materials: AWS says those SOA-C03 language deliveries retire after November 19, 2026. The credential page still lists both among offered languages as checked September 29, 2026; confirm the actual exam language and date in the booking system. This language notice does not retire the English or Japanese exam.

Individuals can compare instruction for their daily operations tasks. Managers can prepare an employer approval brief; teams can ask for shared monitoring and recovery practice. Research, an exam and detailed planning are optional when asking about training.

Requirements & experience

Readiness is not an admission rule

AWS's SOA-C03 target-candidate description describes about one year operating AWS workloads plus related operations experience. It calls for familiarity with logging and troubleshooting, networking, scripting, an operating system, infrastructure as code, security and cost-aware operation. That is a preparation profile, not a formal registration prerequisite. The certificate alone does not prove someone can run a production incident.

You can ask about training immediately. For an optional readiness exercise, deploy a small service, create a meaningful alarm, intentionally cause a non-production failure, diagnose it from logs and metrics, restore from a backup, and explain the permissions, recovery target and continuing AWS charges. Use a spending alert and delete test resources afterward. If you cannot perform that sequence, a compressed exam-prep class may help only if it includes learner-operated labs and feedback. This is Learnerside's exercise, not an AWS exam question or a promise of job readiness.

Formal entry: AWS permits certification without specific prerequisites. A prior certification or training purchase is not mandatory. The experience recommendation and a selected course's admission expectations are separate.

The current guide recommends about one year deploying, managing and troubleshooting AWS workloads and at least one year in a related operations role. Useful background includes operating systems, networking, scripting, command-line tools and infrastructure as code. Open registration does not establish readiness.

Exams & specializations

AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate, checked October 12, 2026: SOA-C03, 130 minutes, 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and USD 150 per attempt. Confirm local taxes, currency, language and delivery appointment.

English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese are listed. Korean and Simplified Chinese delivery retires after November 19, 2026; this does not retire the credential or English and Japanese delivery.

Scoring uses 50 scored and 15 unscored questions, with a minimum scaled score of 720 on a 100–1,000 scale. That is not a published 72% correct threshold or a personal pass prediction.

Skills measured

What SOA-C03 actually covers

The five weights below are percentages of scored SOA-C03 content, not a course syllabus. AWS's full guide contains the task statements and service scope.

SOA-C03 content domainScored weightDecision test
Monitoring, logging, analysis, remediation and performance optimization22%Can you detect a fault, interpret evidence and choose a safe remediation?
Reliability and business continuity22%Can you protect availability, restore data and explain recovery tradeoffs?
Deployment, provisioning and automation22%Can you deploy and maintain resources repeatably, then troubleshoot a failed change?
Security and compliance16%Can you apply least privilege, monitoring and relevant controls without claiming a configuration is automatically compliant?
Networking and content delivery18%Can you diagnose connectivity, DNS and delivery behavior in an AWS workload?

The AWS comparison of SOA-C02 and SOA-C03 shows that the retired version had six domains; SOA-C03 has five. In particular, the old separate cost/performance domain was redistributed. The June 2026 guide revision also changed listed skills and service examples. When evaluating courseware, ask the provider to map its labs to the current five-domain guide and June revision, not merely to display an SOA-C03 logo.

Three operations questions before buying instruction

These are original Learnerside learning prompts, not real AWS exam questions, a scored test or a pass predictor. Use a sandbox or written explanation, never a production incident.

1. An alarm fires after a deployment. What evidence would you collect before changing anything? Explain the deployment timeline, workload symptoms, logs/metrics and a reversible rollback. If you can name services but cannot explain a safe sequence, prioritize troubleshooting labs with feedback.

2. A backup reports success. What remains unproven? Explain a non-production restore, data integrity, permissions and recovery time/data-loss targets. A successful backup job alone does not demonstrate recovery; look for a course where you perform the restore.

3. A team offers a three-day class at an attractive fee. What would make it the wrong purchase? Consider course revision, prerequisites, time zone, hands-on entitlement, AWS charges, feedback, voucher and cancellation terms. Missing terms are unknown, not zero-cost extras.

Costs

Exam cost, difficulty and training choice

AWS lists a 130-minute, 65-question multiple-choice or multiple-response exam and a USD 150 exam fee on its credential page as checked September 29, 2026. The guide distinguishes 50 scored and 15 unscored questions. USD 150 is an issuer list price, not your regional checkout total; taxes, foreign exchange, retakes, labs, subscription access and tuition can add cost.

The difficulty comes from operational judgment under imperfect evidence: choosing a monitoring signal, tracing a failure, restoring service and balancing security and continuity. Memorizing service names is insufficient. The public guide and issuer-linked preparation resources provide optional support; check which AWS Skill Builder items require an account or paid subscription before assuming they are free. Budget for the AWS resources used in hands-on labs even when course content is free.

Paid training can be useful if you need supervised troubleshooting, a fixed team schedule or employer-funded lab time. This page has not verified a dated SOA-C03 seat, provider authorization, tuition or voucher. Ask a seller for the exact SOA-C03 courseware revision, delivery organization, dates and time zone, learner-operated labs, AWS usage charges, recordings and access period, instructor feedback, voucher and retake terms, and cancellation policy. Compare the total per learner, not only an advertised course fee. An old SysOps course needs an explicit current-version mapping.

Total budget: exam attempt + selected tuition + subscription or lab usage + optional travel + time away from work + a possible retake + renewal. The selected total is unknown. Ask whether vouchers, cloud credits, recordings and retakes are included, with expiry and refund terms. Apply a discount only after verifying account eligibility.

For a team, verify group terms, each learner's practice access and feedback. A public exam fee is not a training quote.

Actual current exam overview describes five scored families weighted 22/22/22/16/18, 50 scored and 15 unidentified unscored items and an overall scaled threshold of 720, not 72 percent or per-domain pass marks. Target candidate has about one year operating AWS workloads and related operations experience; recommended preparation is separate from formal exam eligibility. Revision history confirms version 1.1 published June 1, 2026. Task-level child bodies and comparison were not reobserved; their existing observation dates remain unchanged. Public objectives are not a taught course, furnished lab or personal readiness. Korean and Simplified Chinese delivery retires after November 19 per separately observed credential body, not credential or English/Japanese retirement. Exam fees and selected course costs remain separate.

This public exam outline is a scope reference, not purchased instruction or practice access. Exam registration, courses and permitted practice have separate costs.

Official course outline: Cloud Operations on AWS

The AWS classroom catalog lists Cloud Operations on AWS as an intermediate, three-day course. It also lists an optional extra AWS Jam day for eligible private AWS deliveries; that is not included automatically in every provider's three-day class. The linked official outline PDF, checked September 30, 2026, carries copyright 2023. Its presence in today's catalog is not proof of SOA-C03 v1.1 alignment.

Published course structure, paraphrasedPractice to ask about
Day 1: operational foundations, permissions, resource inventory and repeatable deploymentInventory auditing and infrastructure-as-code labs
Day 2: resource management, availability, scaling, monitoring and security evidenceAutomated operations and workload-health labs
Day 3: resilient networking, storage, recovery and cost controlBackup/recovery practice and an operations capstone

The outline recommends Technical Essentials, development or administration experience, command-line skills and basic networking. These are course preparation recommendations, not exam registration requirements. The course's operational scope is useful, but not automatic complete exam coverage. Ask the specific delivery organization to map its current modules and learner-operated labs to the five-domain SOA-C03 guide before paying.

The public guide and documentation are optional ways to explore fit. For Skill Builder practice, check the individual resource's entitlement, not the platform name: a subscription, employer seat or AWS lab charges may apply. For a class, request a written per-learner or cohort quote with time zone and inclusions. No price or calendar on this page is a bookable offer, and a course catalog listing does not establish that a seller is an AWS Training Partner. Confirm the exact delivery organization in the AWS partner information.

The current classroom catalog, checked October 12, 2026, lists Cloud Operations on AWS as intermediate, three days, with an optional one-day Jam on private AWS deliveries. The linked outline carries copyright 2023. Catalog days do not establish contact hours or personal preparation time. Confirm coverage of the June 1, 2026 SOA-C03 revision rather than assuming a dated course is exam-complete.

AWS preparation resources offer another route for selected gaps. Verify which resources require payment. Public reading does not furnish an AWS account or make cloud usage free.

Jobs & salary context

The AWS overview names roles including CloudOps engineer, cloud support engineer and cloud operations specialist. Titles and hiring requirements vary; passing SOA-C03 alone does not establish production experience or secure employment.

CloudOps engineer

Useful work evidence: monitoring that prompts action, controlled changes, tested backups and documented recovery.

Cloud support engineer

Useful work evidence: diagnosing access and connectivity failures, reproducing incidents and communicating a safe resolution.

Cloud systems operations

Useful work evidence: repeatable deployment, operating-system administration and clear ownership of maintenance tasks.

U.S. BLS network and computer systems administrators: May 2025 median annual pay of $99,130, checked October 12, 2026. This broad occupation is not a CloudOps-holder salary, entry-level offer or measured certification premium. Compare actual local jobs, seniority and responsibilities.

Renewal

Roles, pay and renewal

AWS names cloud operations specialist, cloud support engineer and CloudOps engineer among candidate role examples. These are relevant work contexts, not jobs awarded by the credential. An occupation's wage data cannot isolate SOA-C03 holders or establish a certification salary premium; this page makes no such claim.

For U.S. occupation context, BLS reports a $99,130 median annual wage in May 2025 for network and computer systems administrators, checked September 30, 2026. That broad occupation includes network/server administration outside AWS; it is not a CloudOps-holder salary, entry-level offer or worldwide benchmark. BLS also projects a 4% employment decline over 2025-2035. Compare the duties and local employer requirements rather than treating a national median as the return on this exam.

AWS's renewal information, checked September 30, 2026, distinguishes three-year exam recertification through the latest CloudOps exam or DevOps Engineer Professional from one-year paid Skill Builder maintenance. Maintenance requires an active certificate within 90 days of expiry and an active subscription. Exam routes may use the certification-account 50% voucher. These are different actions and costs: no universal $0 renewal total is established. Check eligibility and checkout charges for the chosen route. Existing SysOps certificates keep their original name and validity period; the new name is not retroactively applied.

The October 12 renewal check confirms three-year validity, with the latest CloudOps Associate or DevOps Professional exam routes, or paid Skill Builder maintenance for a one-year extension while the credential is active. Verify eligibility and current terms in your account.
