Decide your exam version before buying preparation
Rechecked October 7, 2026: the AWS credential page and September announcement now agree that November 30 is the last DVA-C02 test day. DVA-C03 registration opens October 27, with general delivery beginning December 1. This resolves the one-day discrepancy observed September 30; that earlier conflict is historical. Confirm your appointment and exact exam version before paying.
- Already prepared for DVA-C02: Use the current DVA-C02 exam guide and check whether your appointment is within the earlier published window.
- Testing after the transition or still deciding: AWS's September update previews DVA-C03 changes involving AI-assisted development and security for AI service integrations. Its detailed guide is due October 27. Build enduring developer skills now, but wait for that guide before buying version-specific courseware or practice exams. Ask a seller for its update, transfer and refund terms.
- New to AWS or software development: An optional small application can help choose instruction in deployment, security, observation and debugging. AWS Cloud Practitioner is broad AWS orientation, not a substitute for coding and deployment practice.
These are planning choices, not a claim that a DVA-C02 credential loses validity at the transition or that a DVA-C03 exam will be easier. Recheck AWS's live sources before spending.
Who is this certification for?
The DVA-C02 guide targets people with one or more years developing and maintaining applications using AWS. AWS expects fluency in a high-level language, application lifecycle concepts, AWS service APIs or SDKs, and use of a CI/CD pipeline. That is recommended preparation, not a formal registration prerequisite. The guide explicitly does not make enterprise architecture, creating a CI/CD platform, IAM administration or server administration the developer candidate's primary job task.
AWS's before-testing policy does not require a prior certification or specific course. Recommended experience and a course's preparation requirements are separate from exam admission; age, identification and testing policies still apply.
An optional permission-safe project: build an API, store and retrieve data, give it least-privilege access, deploy through a pipeline, then diagnose a failed deployment and an application error from logs and metrics. Explain which costs could continue after the exercise. If those tasks are unfamiliar, compare foundation support, guided instruction and permitted practice before choosing an exam or compressed class. This is Learnerside's readiness prompt, not an AWS exam question.
What the current DVA-C02 exam covers
The four percentages below are from the DVA-C02 guide and describe scored content. They are not DVA-C03 weights or a complete course outline. Use AWS's detailed guide when published for the exam version you will actually take.
| DVA-C02 domain | Scored weight | Practical preparation question |
|---|
| Development with AWS Services | 32% | Can you build and optimize an application using the right AWS APIs and data services? |
| Security | 26% | Can you protect application data, secrets and service permissions? |
| Deployment | 24% | Can you package, release and recover an application through a delivery workflow? |
| Troubleshooting and Optimization | 18% | Can you use logs and metrics to find faults and improve performance or cost? |
The official guide contains detailed task statements and service references. AWS notes that emerging AI-assisted development topics may appear as unscored DVA-C02 questions; do not mistake them for proof of DVA-C03's final outline.
What AWS has previewed for DVA-C03
AWS's September update gives a preliminary DVA-C03 map: Development with AWS Services 30%, Security 26%, Testing and Deployment 22%, and Troubleshooting and Optimization 22%. Compared with the DVA-C02 guide's 32/26/24/18, the third domain is renamed and the published weights shift. AWS also previews AI-assisted coding, testing and troubleshooting plus security for AI service integrations. These are official preview details, not the detailed task guide AWS says will be available October 27. Ask a training provider to show its DVA-C03 update after that guide appears; do not assume a DVA-C02 course covers the changed scope.
Difficulty, cost and training choice
This is an applied developer exam, not a vocabulary test or evidence of production competence by itself. AWS's credential page lists 130 minutes, 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions, and a USD 150 exam fee as checked September 30, 2026. The DVA-C02 guide says 50 questions are scored and 15 are unscored, with a minimum scaled score of 720, not 72% correct. The USD fee is an observed exam listing, not a current regional checkout price or a tuition quote; tax, discounts, retakes, labs and subscription charges are separate.
Public guides and instruction can support different needs; choose learning support for the work, feedback and schedule you need. Use AWS spend controls before running labs. Investigate paid instruction when you need code review, guided debugging, lab access, an employer deadline or a team schedule. This page does not verify any provider's available seat, authorized status, tuition, voucher, recordings or cancellation terms. Ask for the exact DVA version, the seller and delivery organization, dated sessions and time zone, learner-performed exercises, lab usage charges, access period, instructor feedback, voucher terms, and course-update policy. A DVA-C02 class is not automatically DVA-C03 preparation.
What the official course teaches
AWS's classroom catalog lists Developing on AWS as intermediate, three days. Its linked official course outline (PDF), checked September 30, 2026, still carries copyright 2021. This is an observed outline, not proof of a new courseware revision or DVA-C03 alignment.
| Course sequence, paraphrased | Learner activity in the published outline |
|---|
| Day 1: development environment, permissions and storage | Configure the environment; work with S3 through SDKs and the CLI. |
| Day 2: application data and APIs | Use DynamoDB, build Lambda functions and integrate API Gateway. |
| Day 3: access, delivery and observation | Complete a Cognito application capstone; study SAM deployment and application monitoring. |
The outline includes presentations, demonstrations and hands-on labs. It recommends AWS Technical Essentials, core-service knowledge and programming experience in Python,.NET or Java. These are course-readiness recommendations, not certification prerequisites. The catalog marks Jam availability; that does not establish inclusion in a seller's package.
The public exam guide is an optional scope reference if you practice independently. Use Skill Builder for targeted gaps, checking each resource's access requirements rather than assuming every lab or practice exam is free. Consider this class for guided application work, not automatic complete exam coverage. Confirm the actual delivered revision, learner lab access, code-review support and DVA transition policy before paying.
Renewal, roles and salary context
AWS says this credential is valid for three years. The current recertification table lists passing the latest Developer Associate exam or AWS DevOps Engineer Professional for a three-year renewal. It also lists a paid AWS Skill Builder maintenance route for a one-year extension when an active credential is within 90 days of expiry. Check the current account eligibility, price and extension before choosing; a possible 50% exam voucher is not an automatic discount in a provider quote.
The relevant work is developing, deploying, securing and troubleshooting AWS applications. For hands-on application work, this guide is a closer preparation lens than the architecture-focused Solutions Architect Associate; choose by the tasks you need to perform, not an assumed difficulty ranking. That is Learnerside's interpretation, not a job guarantee.
For U.S. occupation-level context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics software-developer profile reports a $135,980 median annual wage in May 2025, checked September 30, 2026. This covers software developers across employers, technologies and experience levels, not AWS Developer certification holders or entry-level offers. It cannot establish a certification pay premium, your likely salary, or whether tuition will pay for itself. Compare relevant local job requirements and your existing coding evidence before using a credential in a career plan.
Next action
You can ask about instruction immediately. An exam-date check, public study and the application exercise are optional planning tools. You can describe your timing and format or prepare an employer brief. An exact budget or detailed plan is not required to ask. Confirm the seller's current AWS training authorization for the specific delivery organization; an AWS logo or this outline alone does not verify it. A request does not authorize provider sharing; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
