OpenShift EX280: choose practical preparation for your work gap

Red Hat Certified System Administrator in OpenShift · EX280 · former Specialist URL retained, not a second credential.

Best fit
Administrators supporting OpenShift access, deployment, networking or cluster operations.
Consider instead
Linux/container foundations or Ansible practice for a different gap—not a compulsory badge ladder.
Before paying
The issuer gives 4.22 versus 4.18; confirm your designated version, regional fee and lab entitlement before paying.
No-contact next step
Trace one fictional unreachable service; choose DO180, DO280 or focused feedback from the gap.

Official EX280 objectives and policies · Compare Red Hat decisions

Who should choose OpenShift administration?

Choose this route when you need to support application-platform access, deployment, network boundaries or cluster operations. Linux administration, container fundamentals and OpenShift experience help. A Linux or Ansible gap may fit RHCSA foundations or RHCE automation instead; these are different work decisions, not a compulsory badge ladder.

The issuer’s preparation guidance allows comparable experience instead of RH124, DO180 or DO280 attendance. RHCSA is strongly recommended but not required. No mandatory employment duration or course purchase is established here. If containers, terminal work or resource manifests are unfamiliar, start with foundations and supervised practice before timed administration.

Confirm your designated exam version before paying

The October 1 exam-page observation says three hours of hands-on tasks, with relevant product documentation and no outside help. Configurations must remain functional across the platform lifecycle. Our concept choices below do not reproduce those tasks or prove that you performed them.

The same page gives OpenShift 4.22 in its overview and 4.18 in its delivery description. It also says multiple versions are in use and directs learners to their designated objectives in the LMS. This is an unresolved first-party conflict, not a confirmed booking version. Match your appointment, objectives, course and practice environment before purchase. Language, accommodations, numerical passing threshold and current delivery availability remain unverified here.

The May 11 naming announcement changes credential names without changing exam content as part of that rename. The retained Specialist URL is not a second credential. The rename alone does not settle today’s version conflict.

Connect objectives to an administration task

These original summaries organize nine retained, unweighted objective groups from the official EX280 outline. No percentages or complete course coverage are inferred. Verify your designated version’s detailed objectives.

TopicPreparation decision
Cluster managementLocate resources, inspect events and logs, and distinguish cluster health from one healthy application.
Declarative resourcesReview manifests, overlays and configuration changes against the intended environment.
Application deploymentTrace replica, selector, service and route relationships when delivery fails.
Identity and permissionsSeparate authentication from the permissions needed by a person or group.
Network securityCompare intended ingress, network policy and TLS boundaries with observed traffic.
Non-HTTP exposureChoose the service and access boundary appropriate to the protocol instead of assuming an HTTP route fits.
Developer self-serviceBalance project templates, quotas and limits with shared capacity and ownership.
OperatorsReview installation scope, dependencies and a controlled update or removal decision.
Application securityCheck service-account privileges, security constraints, secrets and scheduled workload permissions.

Ask an instructor to connect the applicable tasks with learner-operated practice and feedback. Listing Kubernetes topics is not enough to establish OpenShift-specific preparation.

DO180, DO280 and self-directed preparation

Foundations and objective review

Choose when: Terminal, Linux or container concepts are still unfamiliar.

Useful evidence: Identify the missing concept before attempting timed administration.

Confirm first: Public objectives are not a complete free course or a licensed cluster.

Read the public preparation guidance

DO180 application operations

Choose when: Your gap is operating applications, storage, networking or availability.

Useful evidence: Ask where you operate the cluster and receive correction feedback.

Confirm first: Exact designated version, lab access, delivery format, price and voucher inclusion.

Inspect the DO180 outline

DO280 shared-cluster configuration

Choose when: You need access, quotas, security, operators or controlled configuration practice.

Useful evidence: Map your task to learner-operated exercises and feedback.

Confirm first: DO180-equivalent skills, intermediate Bash, version, access period and total quote.

Inspect the DO280 outline

The current official DO180: Operating a Production Cluster outline covers application delivery, storage, networking, availability and safe updates. It recommends DO080 or comparable container knowledge and basic Bash; RH104 is encouraged. DO280: Configuring a Production Cluster covers shared-cluster access, quotas, security, declarative configuration, networking, operators and updates. It recommends DO180 or equivalent skills and intermediate Bash; RH124 is encouraged.

Both course pages describe OpenShift 4.22. The exam page still cites older course titles and conflicting exam versions. The outlines are useful preparation evidence, not proof that a particular course package covers your designated exam or includes an exam attempt.

The public objectives are free to read. The issuer links a no-cost skills assessment, which may involve its own access or data terms; we have not completed it or sent your information. Neither resource is a complete instructor-led course, a licensed practice environment or a pass prediction.

For paid help, compare self-paced access, instructor-led delivery or a team class by the support you need. Confirm the seller and exact authorization, version, learner-operated labs, feedback, access period, captions, recordings, time zone and cancellation terms. Exact tuition, duration, dates, seats, voucher, retake and subscription-tier entitlements are unknown. General Red Hat Learning Subscription marketing does not establish your package. No outside training provider is endorsed or authorized by this page.

Exam cost and maintaining a current credential

Current exam checkout, taxes, retake terms, training and practice access are unverified. An older fee observation is withheld because its exact dated price provenance is not inspectable here. Use the issuer’s regional booking route to confirm your actual package. Total ownership cost is unknown, not zero.

The currentness announcement describes a three-year framework. Passing your highest-level exam again, earning a new credential at the same level or passing a higher-level exam can renew current credentials under the issuer’s rules. Confirm your account’s level, current status and deadline rather than assuming any exam renews every credential. Future payable renewal cost remains unknown.

An original work sample for employer or team approval

For a fictional service that becomes unreachable after a deployment, describe the expected manifest, replicas, selector, service, route and permitted traffic. Name the owner who can approve a change. Record a sanitized observation, competing causes, a bounded correction and a recovery check. Distinguish what you actually performed from a proposed plan.

Use a disposable environment you control within existing entitlements. Do not provision paid infrastructure, expose secrets or change an employer cluster for this exercise. A correct concept answer, course advertisement or credential is not operational authorization.

Review rubric: Can another reader trace the traffic path, distinguish a selector failure from a permission problem, name the change owner and describe a recovery check? A missing answer identifies a preparation gap, not an exam score.

Related roles, skills and salary context

The issuer names system administrators, SREs, platform and infrastructure engineers, and developers who deploy applications. Their duties overlap but their responsibilities differ. Cluster diagnosis, declarative resources, access control and networking are useful skills to discuss in a work sample; this page does not establish your eligibility for every named role.

BLS network and computer systems administrators, checked October 1, reports a U.S. May 2025 median annual wage of USD 99,130. This is a broader occupation, not an OpenShift-certified salary, an SRE-specific estimate, an entry offer or a causal certification premium. Match the employer, location and experience requirement.

Optional: explore OpenShift administration concepts

Eighteen original fictional choices cover nine unweighted groups. They are not Red Hat exam questions, a practical exam simulation, complete preparation or a pass prediction.
