PMI certifications: choose CAPM foundations or PMP project leadership
Start with the work you need to do and the experience you can document. Compare CAPM and PMP eligibility, practical preparation, qualifying education, course support and total cost without assuming you must buy both credentials.
Official directory link checked October 1, 2026. This hub covers published Learnerside guides, not every vendor credential. Exam and training observations retain the separate dates shown in each guide.
CAPM does not require project-management work experience. It requires a secondary credential, age 18 or older and 23 hours of project-management education before the exam. Its outline includes fundamentals, predictive approaches, agile and business analysis. An exam pass is not proof of independent project leadership.
PMP requires five, four, three or two years of non-overlapping project-management experience within the last ten years, depending on your education route, plus 35 training hours or an active CAPM. A course cannot create that experience; PMI decides whether your application qualifies.
Test practical readiness with the guide’s tasks and original assessment where available. Recommended experience, formal eligibility and a requirement owner’s approval are different questions. Neither a score nor course completion guarantees passing or employment.

2 published guides—not the vendor’s entire credential inventory. Each card carries its own observation dates; these do not verify every guide fact, a current training price or an available seat. Experience requirements and recommendations remain separate; neither predicts a pass rate or job outcome.

Renewal filters describe recorded requirements, not a price or guaranteed eligibility. Check the guide and issuer before paying.
PMI describes Kickoff as a free introductory course with agile or predictive templates. Its free-learning directory, checked October 1, 2026, describes a 45-minute course and toolkit. That is not the full 23-hour CAPM or 35-hour PMP education requirement, and its completion badge is not either certification.
Original practice task: use a fictional project to write a one-page scope, three dependencies, a risk with an owner, and a change that needs a sponsor decision. Compare your reasoning with a colleague or instructor. This is a learning exercise, not a PMI exam question, eligibility assessment or employer outcome.
CAPM requires 15 PDUs and PMP 60 PDUs in each three-year renewal cycle. Initial exam fees, membership, retakes, renewal and tuition are separate; verify your own payable amounts rather than using a historical price as a current quote. See the linked credential guides for official requirements and dated offer evidence.
Training options, course outlines and total cost
What should you verify before paying for PMI training?
First decide whether you need qualifying education, exam preparation, practical foundations or feedback on a work sample. Those are different purchases. Check the exact course’s exam outline, documented hours, instructor, modality, schedule, time zone, access and refund terms. For PMP live training completed from December 1, 2026, verify the eligible provider category; self-paced training follows a different rule. A general ATP badge does not establish the exact offer, current seat or application acceptance.
Start with the official preparation linked from the credential guide. Free reading or videos do not establish that labs, practice exams or a voucher are included. Pay for structure, feedback, accessibility, a workable schedule or team support when those solve a real constraint.
Use a guide’s training comparison where available; no comparison link means Learnerside has not published one, not that training is unavailable. A dated price is not a quote and a published class is not a confirmed seat. Confirm time zone, modality, per-learner versus cohort price, taxes, voucher, retake, lab and recording access, cancellation and accessibility before purchase. Unknown extras are not zero.
Roles, skills and salary context
What does the credential show—and what does it not show?
Project coordination, business analysis and experienced project leadership are different responsibilities, not a mandatory CAPM-to-PMP purchase ladder. Practice defining scope, dependencies, risks, stakeholder decisions and measurable outcomes. Neither credential guarantees a project-manager title; no reviewed certification-specific salary or causal pay premium is claimed here.
Where a guide supplies wage context, read the occupation, geography, reporting year and mapping limits. Occupational wages are not the salary of credential holders, a causal certification pay premium or an offer you should expect. If a reviewed role mapping or wage source is missing, the answer remains unknown.
Keep researching, get employer support or ask a short question
You can use these guides without contact. For an employer or team, start with the work outcome, current skills, schedule and delivery preference. An exact budget is not required to ask for help. A request permits Learnerside to reply; provider sharing requires separate consent naming the recipient.
