Quick verdict
PL-300 is an intermediate Microsoft credential for people who prepare, model, visualize, analyze, and secure data with Power BI. It is a stronger fit for someone who can work through a real reporting problem than for someone who only needs a first introduction to data concepts. Public study and instruction can support different needs. Choose exercises, feedback, schedule and an appropriate environment for your goal; a three-day course is not a substitute for practice or a promise of a passing result.
Microsoft's credential page and PL-300 study guide were checked September 29, 2026. The current guide labels its measured-skills section April 20, 2026. Check it again before booking, especially when using an older class outline or a non-English exam.
Who should choose PL-300?
- Good fit: You already work with business data or reporting and want to demonstrate a Power BI workflow from messy source data through a useful, governed report.
- Prepare first: You have not yet shaped data in Power Query, built relationships in a model, written a DAX measure, or explained who can see a report. An optional small project can help identify useful instruction and practice.
- Different starting point: If relational versus non-relational data and analytics are still new, DP-900 is a broader beginner data foundation. PL-300 tests Power BI work rather than making DP-900 a formal prerequisite.
Microsoft labels PL-300 Intermediate and says a candidate should be proficient with Power Query and DAX. That is a recommended capability profile, not a claimed registration gate. The public credential page does not list a prior certification as required. Microsoft credential page, checked September 29, 2026.
What does the current PL-300 exam cover?
The official study guide lists four domains. Weight ranges are not exact question counts. The questions below are examples for planning your study, not Microsoft exam questions; use the official guide for the full objectives.
| Official domain | Published range | Practical preparation question |
|---|
| Prepare the data | 25-30% | Can you connect to a source, clean errors and missing values, shape tables in Power Query, and choose a suitable loading approach? |
| Model the data | 25-30% | Can you create useful relationships and measures, explain a star-schema choice, and troubleshoot a slow or misleading model? |
| Visualize and analyze the data | 25-30% | Can you choose readable visuals, support filtering and navigation, and explain the insight and limitations to a stakeholder? |
| Manage and secure Power BI | 15-20% | Can you explain workspaces, distribution, refresh, permissions, and row-level security for the intended audience? |
The first three domains carry similar published ranges. Do not skip data modeling to polish charts. The guide also includes current capabilities such as DirectLake and Copilot-supported report tasks; use its dated objectives as the source of truth for what your exam may cover.
How hard is PL-300?
It is an applied analyst exam, not just a list of Power BI menu names. Try a small, permission-safe project: combine orders, customers, and dates; clean and relate the data; write a measure that survives filters; make an accessible report; explain one business decision; and describe how access and refresh would be managed. If you can only follow a prepared tutorial but cannot explain your model or reconcile a surprising total, keep practicing before you schedule.
The official practice assessment helps find weak areas, but a practice result or course-completion badge does not predict a passing score. A candidate with strong spreadsheet skills may still need DAX, model, and sharing practice. Microsoft credential page and study guide, checked September 29, 2026.
Public resources and instruction choices
You can use the PL-300 study guide, the linked Microsoft Learn paths, the free practice assessment, and the exam sandbox on the credential page. Practice on data you are permitted to use; do not upload private business data into an unapproved environment. Check tenant and product-license terms before enabling paid features or using an employer workspace.
Microsoft lists PL-300T00-A: Design and manage analytics solutions using Power BI as a three-day intermediate course. Its public description covers obtaining and processing data, modeling, analysis, reports, dashboards, sharing, and distribution. Three class days are not a universal preparation-time estimate. A live class is most useful if you need guided model/DAX feedback, a suitable lab environment, or an employer-supported schedule.
This page does not verify any provider's current date, seat, tuition, Power BI or Fabric entitlement, lab access, recording, voucher, authorized-partner status, or cancellation terms. Before paying, ask who sells and delivers the class; which courseware revision and April 2026 objectives it follows; what hands-on dataset and tenant are provided; format, time zone and contact hours; full per-learner cost; exam-voucher inclusion; accessibility arrangements; and refund or transfer terms. The official course page identifies a course, not a bookable seat.
Exam cost and annual renewal
Microsoft lists a 100-minute proctored PL-300 assessment. Exam price depends on the country or region where it is proctored; confirm the amount, tax, accommodations, and retake rules at checkout. A training price is separate unless exact seller terms include an exam voucher. Microsoft credential page, checked September 29, 2026.
This associate credential has a 12-month renewal frequency. Microsoft says role-based certifications can be renewed without charge by passing an online assessment during the six-month eligibility window before expiration. Plan for the ongoing skill maintenance rather than treating the initial exam as permanent. Credential page and renewal policy, checked September 29, 2026.
Roles and salary context
PL-300 aligns with some tasks performed by data analysts and business-intelligence professionals, especially reporting and self-service analytics. It does not by itself establish business-domain judgment, production experience, employer eligibility, or a job offer. Occupation salary data includes workers with many skills and levels of experience; it cannot isolate the pay of PL-300 holders or show a raise caused by the credential. No certification-specific salary number is asserted here.
Next action
Use the current study guide to assess your Power Query, model/DAX, reporting, and security gaps. Projects and practice assessments are optional preparation tools. You can immediately describe your schedule and preferred format or draft an employer approval brief. A request does not authorize sharing your details with a provider; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
