decision faq
Which cloud certification should I start with — AWS, Azure, or Google?
Direct answer
What to do
Start with the foundation credential for the cloud you use or credibly plan to use: AWS Cloud Practitioner for AWS, Azure Fundamentals for Azure, or Google Cloud Digital Leader for Google Cloud business and service literacy. If you cannot name a target platform or the gap is hands-on administration rather than vocabulary, skip the foundation exam for now and build practical cloud skills first.

Take a foundation exam when
- Your current environment or target work already points to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Cloud terminology, service models, billing, security responsibility, and provider vocabulary are the real gap.
- You will pair the exam with small hands-on tasks in the same platform.
Skip it or choose a role-based route when
- You are choosing from popularity lists and cannot name a platform used in your target work.
- You already administer or build in that cloud and need role-level proof instead of a vocabulary credential.
- You expect a foundational exam by itself to prove cloud-engineering or architecture readiness.

Detailed evidence, examples, and source notes
Start with the foundational cert for the platform your target employers use — all three vendors publish an entry credential with no prerequisites, so the choice is about platform, not difficulty. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is "a good starting point... for individuals with no prior IT or cloud experience." Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is a beginner credential and "a common starting point" (and isn't a prerequisite for the role-based certs). Google Cloud Digital Leader is foundational and role-independent with no hands-on experience required. We don't crown a 'best' cloud. Check which platforms appear in the roles and environments you actually or credibly target, choose that platform's foundational credential only when vocabulary and service-model literacy are the gap, and compare its current exam and lifecycle cost before registering.
What we don't know
We don't publish live job-posting demand, platform-popularity, or market-share rankings because we don't hold a representative current dataset for those claims; platform fit varies by role, region, and employer.
