Pathway · Career changer → cloud

Career change to cloud, starting from the honest place

Start by separating two gaps: cloud vocabulary and hands-on administration. Fundamentals credentials can organize vocabulary; they do not establish production administration ability. IT support or systems work can build the underlying networking, operating-system, identity, and troubleshooting evidence, but it is not a mandatory rung when you can already demonstrate those capabilities another way.

The honest on-ramp

Choose the missing foundation, not a mandatory job ladder

Cloud administration draws on networking, operating systems, identity, infrastructure, and troubleshooting. Use an IT-support or systems route when those are the material gaps and real support work is accessible to you. Skip that route when you can already demonstrate the same foundations through prior technical work, labs, or projects; then test the platform-specific gap directly.

If systems administration, data-center operations, or comparable hands-on practice already makes the foundations review rather than new material, start with the platform decision below.

What actually transfers — and what does not

Non-IT backgrounds vary widely in how much transfers to cloud work. Structured analytical thinking, process discipline, and documentation habits transfer. Familiarity with business logic and data flows (from finance, operations, or project management) transfers into cloud cost management and governance contexts. Prior scripting or data experience transfers into infrastructure-as-code earlier than most people expect.

Capabilities that may still be new without deliberate study include networking concepts (IP addressing, subnetting, routing, DNS — these underpin every cloud platform), operating system fundamentals (how Linux and Windows manage processes, storage, and permissions), and virtualization (what a VM is and how compute resources are allocated). The fundamentals certification covers these topics in managed depth; the administrator credential assumes you can apply them in a real environment, not just recognize the vocabulary on an exam. See the cited work-activity overlap for your specific background:

The realistic target role

Cloud Engineer

Occupation-level BLS median: $116,580 (SOC 15-1299) — a national occupation figure across experience levels; it does not establish entry pay, credential-holder pay, or a promised outcome. This SOC is a broad BLS “all other” catch-all group covering many different jobs, so the median is not specific to this role. BLS OEWS May 2025 — Computer Occupations, All Other (15-1299), national checked 2026-06-25T08:28:38+00:00BLS projects +8.2% employment change for this occupation between 2024 and 2034 — from 472,000 jobs to 510,500. It is a forecast, not a guarantee, and it describes the occupation, not this certification.

This figure describes the destination occupation — where an experienced cloud administrator works. It does not describe what a fundamentals-certification holder earns. The fundamentals certs on this ladder are orientation credentials; the occupation figure comes from the administrator-level certification page data and belongs to that destination, not to the starting point.

The honest certification ladder

Three conditional checkpoints, not a mandatory ladder

The first two are platform-specific orientation credentials. Choose from the environment you use or want to investigate; taking both is not the default. Fit labels derive from each vendor’s own published eligibility — entry-friendly or conditions-apply — not from what would be easiest to sell you.

Microsoft Azure Fundamentals Designed for entry · exam $99 (fee as of 2026-06-19)

Use this as Azure vocabulary orientation when concepts and services are the gap. It does not establish administration ability.

Vendor’s recommended background: Microsoft labels this a Beginner credential and a common starting point; the page says you should have skills and experience working with an area of IT, such as infrastructure management, database management, or software development.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Designed for entry · exam $100 (fee as of 2026-08-23)

Use this as AWS vocabulary orientation when AWS is the environment you need to understand. Taking both fundamentals credentials is not a default requirement.

Vendor’s recommended background: Up to 6 months of exposure to AWS Cloud — explicitly not required; the exam targets candidates new to cloud who may not have an IT background.

Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate Reach — conditions apply · exam $165 (fee as of 2026-06-19)

Consider this when you can already practice Azure administration tasks and explain the underlying platform decisions.

Vendor’s recommended background: Microsoft describes candidates as having subject-matter expertise implementing, managing, and monitoring Azure environments; familiarity with operating systems, networking, servers, and virtualization; and experience with PowerShell, Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID. This is candidate guidance, not a registration requirement.

The money picture

What it costs, and the levers that can cover it

The exam fees above are only one part of the purchase decision. Renewal differs by credential and route, so verify each linked decision before treating a missing maintenance fee as free renewal. Budget for the study resources and attempt policy you actually choose. Two possible funding levers are WIOA, which can fund training and exams through your local American Job Center (eligibility is determined locally, not by us), and Workforce Pell reaches short-term certificate programs at eligible community colleges. Both are covered with sources and caveats on the funding page:

The study path

Free and official first

Start with the issuer’s published objectives and any official free preparation available through the certification explorer. Investigate instructor-led training when a real constraint — schedule, instructor feedback, lab access, or employer funding — makes the format useful. Compare the complete transaction, including labs, voucher, retake terms, recordings, schedule, and cancellation terms; the format does not establish an exam or employment outcome.

Common questions

Career change to cloud, answered honestly

Can I get a cloud job with just a fundamentals certification?
The cited fundamentals scopes establish cloud vocabulary, not the ability to administer a production environment or a hiring outcome. Pair the credential decision with hands-on evidence for the work you want to perform.
Azure Fundamentals or AWS Cloud Practitioner?
Choose from the platform you use now, can access for projects, or intend to investigate next. Both are fundamentals-level orientation decisions; neither is a mandatory predecessor to every cloud role.
Is cloud computing an entry-level career?
“Cloud” covers different work. Administration tasks require networking, operating-system, identity, and troubleshooting evidence. IT support or systems work can build that evidence, but it is not a universal prerequisite when you can already demonstrate the underlying capabilities through other work or projects.
Should I pay for a cloud bootcamp?
First identify whether the gap is vocabulary, hands-on administration, or both. Check the official/free preparation and readiness evidence before paying. Investigate instructor-led training when schedule, pacing, labs, or feedback are the actual constraint; verify the exact offering, total price, and cancellation terms.
When is AZ-104 realistic?
Consider AZ-104 when you can practice the administration tasks in its current scope and explain the underlying networking, identity, compute, storage, and governance decisions.

One bounded next decision
