Help desk to cloud: the in-field upgrade path
Start from the work you can already demonstrate. Ticket troubleshooting, identity administration, and operating-system practice may transfer; platform vocabulary, cloud networking, automation, or hands-on administration may still be the material gap. Choose the gap before choosing a credential.

What your help-desk work already gives you
Three things transfer directly. Ticket-driven troubleshooting: diagnosing and resolving end-user issues is structured problem-solving practice that can support cloud labs. User and identity administration: resetting passwords, managing accounts, and working with Active Directory can provide identity and access-management context. OS familiarity: Windows and Linux administration at the support tier is foundational for cloud VM and container work. The fundamentals certification on either platform covers a lot of this territory in new vocabulary, but the overlap must be tested rather than assumed.
The honest gaps: infrastructure-as-code (scripting and template-based deployment is a real skill jump, not just vocabulary) and networking depth (subnetting, routing, and load-balancing at the cloud layer goes beyond typical help-desk exposure). If your networking fundamentals feel thin before the administrator-level rung, the optional detour is the reviewed Network+ decision.
The realistic target role

Occupation-level BLS median: $116,580 (SOC 15-1299) — a national occupation figure that spans experience levels; it does not establish entry pay, credential-holder pay, or a promised outcome. This SOC is a broad BLS “all other” catch-all group covering many different jobs, so the median is not specific to this role. BLS OEWS May 2025 — Computer Occupations, All Other (15-1299), national checked 2026-06-25T08:28:38+00:00BLS projects +8.2% employment change for this occupation between 2024 and 2034 — from 472,000 jobs to 510,500. It is a forecast, not a guarantee, and it describes the occupation, not this certification.

The certification ladder
Four conditional decisions across two platforms
The first two organize platform vocabulary; the latter two address different hands-on administration or architecture gaps. Choose from the environment and tasks you can access rather than treating all four as a sequence. Fit labels derive from each vendor’s published eligibility.
Microsoft Azure Fundamentals Designed for entry · exam $99 (fee as of 2026-06-19)
Use this for Azure vocabulary orientation when that is the material gap; do not treat it as administration evidence.
Vendor’s recommended background: Microsoft labels this a Beginner credential and a common starting point; the page says you should have skills and experience working with an area of IT, such as infrastructure management, database management, or software development.
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Designed for entry · exam $100 (fee as of 2026-08-23)
Use this for AWS vocabulary orientation when AWS is the environment you need to understand; taking both fundamentals credentials is not a default requirement.
Vendor’s recommended background: Up to 6 months of exposure to AWS Cloud — explicitly not required; the exam targets candidates new to cloud who may not have an IT background.
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate Reach — conditions apply · exam $165 (fee as of 2026-06-19)
Consider this when you can practise Azure administration tasks and explain the underlying identity, networking, compute, storage, and governance decisions.
Vendor’s recommended background: Microsoft describes candidates as having subject-matter expertise implementing, managing, and monitoring Azure environments; familiarity with operating systems, networking, servers, and virtualization; and experience with PowerShell, Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID. This is candidate guidance, not a registration requirement.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate Reach — conditions apply · exam $150 (fee as of 2026-08-23)
Consider this when architecture decisions and hands-on AWS work are the gap; treat the vendor background as guidance rather than a registration gate.
Vendor’s recommended background: At least 1 year of hands-on experience designing AWS cloud solutions (the vendor's recommendation, not a requirement); candidates with 1–3 years of IT experience have earned it.

The money picture
Check funding terms before paying
If your employer has a written training or reimbursement policy, verify eligible offerings, vouchers, retakes, repayment clauses, and approval timing before paying. Learnerside does not infer that funding is available. For other sourced funding possibilities and route-dependent cost semantics, see:
The study path
Official-first, then fill the gaps
Start with the issuer’s current objectives and any official free preparation exposed by the explorer. Use the certification-leaf readiness check to compare your knowledge with the published domains. Consider paid instruction only when schedule, lab access, pacing, or feedback is the actual constraint.
Common questions
Help desk to cloud, answered honestly
- Do I need a cloud cert to move from help desk to cloud?
- No universal credential sequence applies. Use a fundamentals credential when cloud vocabulary is the gap; use an administrator or architecture decision only when you can practise the relevant platform tasks. Neither establishes a hiring outcome.
- Azure or AWS first?
- Choose from the environment you use now, can access for projects, or intend to investigate. Azure Fundamentals and AWS Cloud Practitioner are orientation decisions for different platforms, not mandatory predecessors to every cloud role.
- Is AZ-104 realistic straight from help desk?
- Consider AZ-104 when you can practise its current administration scope and explain the identity, networking, compute, storage, and governance decisions. A fundamentals credential is optional orientation, not a formal predecessor.
- Will my employer pay for cloud certifications?
- Check your employer’s written L&D or reimbursement policy before paying, including eligibility, voucher, retake, and repayment terms. Learnerside does not infer that a budget or reimbursement is available. The funding page covers other sourced possibilities with their own eligibility boundaries.
- Do I need to learn networking first?
- Test IP addressing, DNS, routing, identity, operating-system, and troubleshooting evidence directly. Use Network+ only when vendor-neutral networking concepts are the material gap; skip it when those foundations are already demonstrable.
One bounded next decision
Use the three-question Fit Check to choose a work family, starting point, and constraint. It returns one action, a direction, or an explicit coverage gap; it does not predict hiring, salary, exam results, or time to employment.
