PL-900 Certification: Exam, Difficulty, and Training
Decision summary
Start free; confirm Copilot Studio coverage before buying
PL-900 introduces Power Platform business solutions, not production-maker proficiency. Microsoft now lists Copilot Studio agents as a separate exam domain; confirm that any class follows the current guide rather than an older course outline.

Quick verdict
PL-900 is a beginner credential for understanding where Microsoft Power Platform can help a business: data in Dataverse, low-code apps, process automation, and agents in Copilot Studio. It is useful for an aspiring maker or a teammate evaluating those tools. It is not proof that you can deploy and govern a production solution alone. Start with Microsoft's free study guide and practice assessment. Consider paid instruction only if you need guided exercises, an instructor, or a coordinated team schedule.
Microsoft's credential page and PL-900 study guide were checked September 29, 2026. The current guide labels its skills section July 24, 2026. Confirm the guide for your exam language and appointment date before committing to a course.
Who is PL-900 for?
- Choose PL-900 when you need to explain what a low-code app, workflow, Dataverse data model, or Copilot Studio agent can and cannot solve before choosing a deeper specialty.
- Build a small example first if you already work in Power Platform and mainly need practical skill. A tiny app or approval flow can reveal a more useful learning gap than a broad fundamentals class.
- Consider a different foundation if your goal is Azure cloud administration or data services rather than Power Platform business solutions. Compare the actual tasks you want to perform, not just the certification labels.
Microsoft calls this a beginner credential and says it can prepare you for role-based certifications but is not a prerequisite for them. That does not mean every beginner is ready to pass or can access every product feature without the right tenant or license. The public credential page does not state a prior-certification requirement. Microsoft credential page, checked September 29, 2026.
What is on the current PL-900 exam?
The Microsoft study guide gives five weighted domains for skills measured as of July 24, 2026. These ranges are not exact question counts. The practical questions below are Learnerside examples, not Microsoft exam items or a copied course outline.
| Official domain | Published range | Practical preparation question |
|---|---|---|
| Describe the business value of Microsoft Power Platform | 5-10% | Can you identify when an app, automation, data service, website, or agent adds value rather than merely naming products? |
| Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environment | 20-25% | Can you explain Dataverse tables and relationships, environments, security boundaries, and basic governance choices? |
| Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Apps | 20-25% | Can you distinguish canvas and model-driven apps and recognize a suitable business use case? |
| Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Automate | 20-25% | Can you map a process to triggers, actions, approvals, or desktop automation at a conceptual level? |
| Describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio | 20-25% | Can you distinguish topics, knowledge sources, tools, testing, publishing, and channels in a simple agent scenario? |
Check an older course outline carefully. Microsoft's current guide includes a separate Copilot Studio agents domain. Its public PL-900T00-A course page, checked the same day, still highlights building a Power Pages site. Power Pages remains in the guide's broader business-value material, but is no longer its own weighted domain. Ask a seller which courseware revision and agent exercises will be taught; do not assume the course listing exactly mirrors the current exam outline.
How hard is PL-900?
For a newcomer, the challenge is choosing the right tool for a business problem and understanding the boundaries between them. Try this readiness exercise: a team needs to collect field requests, route approvals, store structured records, and answer policy questions. Sketch which parts might use Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, and Copilot Studio, and note where licensing, security, or human review must be checked. If you cannot explain those choices, use Microsoft's free modules before scheduling the exam.
A practice score or one-day class is not a pass guarantee. Microsoft can update the exam; use the current guide as the scope authority, not a vendor's older marketing summary.
Free study versus paid training
Start with the official study guide, its linked self-paced learning, the free practice assessment on the credential page, and the exam sandbox. Build a small example only in an environment you are allowed to use. Microsoft product trials, tenant permissions, and paid features are separate from free reading; verify their terms before enabling anything billable.
Microsoft lists PL-900T00-A: Introduction to Microsoft Power Platform as a one-day beginner course. One course day is not a universal preparation estimate. A class is more defensible when a real instructor, structured hands-on access, or team pacing solves a problem that self-study does not.
This page does not verify a provider's seat, tuition, instructor, tenant access, lab environment, recording, voucher, Microsoft partner status, or cancellation policy. Ask the legal seller and delivery organization for the exact courseware revision, Copilot Studio coverage, schedule and time zone, learning environment and licensing, full per-learner cost, voucher terms, accessibility arrangements, and transfer rules. An official course identity is not a bookable provider offer.
Exam, renewal, roles, and salary limits
Microsoft lists a 45-minute proctored PL-900 assessment, with exam price determined by the country or region where it is proctored. Check the current amount, taxes, retake rules, and available accommodations at booking. A class does not include the exam unless the seller's exact terms say so. Microsoft credential page, checked September 29, 2026.
Microsoft's renewal policy says Fundamentals certifications do not expire. The products and assessed skills still change, so that is not permission to rely on an old course indefinitely.
PL-900 may be relevant to aspiring app makers, business analysts, operations staff, and managers choosing low-code tools. Those jobs require different experience and responsibility. Occupation salary data cannot establish a PL-900-holder salary or a pay increase caused by this credential; no certification-specific salary number is claimed here.
Next action
Use the official July 24 study guide as a checklist, try the free practice assessment, and identify one real scenario you cannot yet explain. If a class would help, describe your schedule and format or build an employer approval brief. A request does not authorize sharing your information with any provider; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
