Power Platform developer: choose learning across the PL-400 / AB-400 transition

Choose developer learning for an actual custom-code, integration or application-lifecycle gap. Check the announced exam and course transition before matching a syllabus or paying for preparation.

Best fit
You have Power Platform and coding experience and need to extend or integrate an application.
Consider instead
Compare AB-410 when the task can be met with low-code app and process building rather than custom-code extensions.
Before paying
Exact exam choice, access permissions, course revision, feedback, regional invoice and a seat need confirmation.

Check which credential and exam fit the task

Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate: Microsoft describes applied Power Platform, authentication, security and ALM knowledge plus development experience. The AB-400 outline also describes developer tooling and AI-assisted work. These knowledge expectations do not establish a numeric employment gate or your readiness.

Check the announced transition before selecting an exam. Microsoft says PL-400 registration closes October 16, 2026, and learners registered on or before that date can schedule and take it through October 30. It announces AB-400 availability from October 16. The same listing says AB-400 registration is available today while describing registration opening exclusively for AB-400 on October 16. That wording does not prove your personal registration or appointment; confirm with the issuer before committing to a course date.

The PL-400 exam page still describes a September 19, 2023 English update and six content families. Its linked study guide now presents only skills measured as of October 16, 2026, with four families matching the published AB-400 guide. These observations do not establish a complete current PL-400 outline for every exam date. Ask which exact outline and language your appointment uses. PL-400 and AB-400 are transition alternatives toward this credential, not two required exam passes.

The following ranges describe the published AB-400 outline associated with the announced October 16 transition. They are future-scoped here, rather than relabeled as the current PL-400 objectives.

  • Build Microsoft Power Platform solutions: 15-20%
  • Extend the user experience: 25-30%
  • Extend Microsoft Power Platform: 35-40%
  • Develop integrations: 10-15%

Published ranges describe exam scope; they are not normalized readiness scores, exact question counts or hiring weights. Read the detailed issuer outline. Microsoft’s study guidance uses a passing scaled score of 700; this is not 70 percent correct or a practice-test target.

A fixed PL-400 or AB-400 question count, type distribution or assessment duration was not verified. Do not infer it from course days, the credential level or another exam.

Registration, recommended preparation, course completion, a certification award and practical competence are different outcomes. No personal credential account, assessment or appointment was operated here.

Public scope and a task-focused first pass

Choose when: You need to identify a concrete application, data, integration or permission gap before paying.

Useful evidence: Read the separate exam and study listings, reconcile the current/future scope and document the exact implementation task. Avoid buying a generic PL-400 course solely from its title.

Confirm first: Public reading does not supply a licensed tenant, Dataverse environment, AI capacity, connector rights, practice review or a bookable class. No product environment was operated.

Read the official scope

PL-400T00-A: Microsoft Power Platform Developer

Choose when: You already develop with code and need supervised extension or integration practice.

Useful evidence: Microsoft lists an advanced, five-day course. Its audience includes coding experience and hands-on Dataverse, canvas/model-driven apps and flows. The course retirement list names October 30, 2026.

Confirm first: Detailed module titles were not readable in the reviewed response. Confirm the exact offered revision, its match to your exam date, learner-operated labs, feedback, access period, tuition, voucher, recordings and cancellation terms.

AB-400T00-A: Extend Microsoft Power Platform Solutions with code and AI

Choose when: Your future learning task includes code-based extensions and AI or agent integration.

Useful evidence: Microsoft announces this advanced, English, three-day course as available October 16, 2026. The overview describes extensibility, code apps, Foundry and Copilot Studio; its audience expects working coding and platform experience.

Confirm first: This is an announced future course, not a verified course seat today. Detailed modules, lab entitlement, instructor feedback, provider, tuition, voucher and access terms remain unknown.

Feedback on an original application design

Choose when: You need to practise a design decision and review its failure and permission boundaries.

Useful evidence: Use the fictional case below to specify what an instructor or mentor should review, including authority, data provenance, deterministic behavior and recovery.

Confirm first: No instructor, provider relationship, dated class, tuition or feedback entitlement is established. Confirm whether learners perform the work and receive individual review.

Try the fictional design case

Compare intelligent-application-builder learning using the implementation responsibility, rather than a salary promise or the word “AI” in a title.

Check costs, renewal and retired training references

The reviewed issuer pages make exam price regional; your exam amount was not verified. Separate exam and retakes, tuition, access expiry, tenant and license, Dataverse and AI capacity, connectors, instructor feedback and tax. Unknown is not zero. Course days are not verified contact hours or a preparation-time estimate.

Renewal evidence: Annual free online assessment for an eligible holder within six months of expiry; the exact renewal page’s English assessment update is September 18, 2023, separate from the upcoming initial-exam scope. No renewal assessment was submitted. The public source does not establish your credential status, renewal window or entitlements.

Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate, PL-200 says the credential, exam and renewal assessments retired August 31, 2026; it can no longer be newly earned or renewed. The course retirement list separately lists PL-200T00 retirement July 31 with AB-410T00 as a replacement course. A replacement course is not proof that credentials or already earned awards are equivalent. The same list names PL-400T00 retirement October 30 and AB-400T00 as its replacement course.

Before payment, confirm the exact exam and effective outline, your existing knowledge, course code and revision, language and dates, learner-operated exercises, accounts and permissions, feedback, accessibility, recordings, voucher and retake terms, cancellation and final invoice. An announced course is not a verified current seat.

Connect learning to responsibilities and pay context

Software development, platform security, problem solving and stakeholder communication can support custom application components and integrations. Use actual employer responsibilities to decide whether software-developer role context fits. These are task associations, not a demonstration of an individual’s competence or a universal credential requirement.

BLS Software Developers reports USD135,980 median annual pay for the United States, May 2025. U.S. Software Developers, SOC 15-1252, May 2025 median annual pay. Applies only to actual software design, development or maintenance duties; not Power Platform credential-holder earnings, a universal title salary, entry pay or a certification premium. Low-code app configuration alone does not establish that occupation.

Try an original fictional integration case

A fictional application receives an integration message twice after a timeout. Each message requests the same service ticket, but the current handler creates a new ticket on every call. Write a design for detecting repeated messages, identifying the caller, checking its permission and preserving an audit trail. Specify the evidence a reviewer would need before approving the integration.

Changed condition: The source system reuses a message identifier for a corrected request, and a retry arrives after the user’s permission has been removed. Explain which identity and version keys you would use, which checks must be repeated, and how you would prevent both duplicate actions and unauthorized updates.

Review rubric: Distinguish transport retries from business requests; document authentication, authorization, key scope, ordering, error handling and audit evidence. Identify deterministic rules before adding AI, propose bounded failure tests and revise the design after feedback. This original fictional paper exercise is not an exam question, a readiness score or a claim of performed work. It requires no real account, deployment or customer data. Use only an authorized learning environment for later implementation.

Prepare a private employer training brief

Record the actual business requirement, intended implementation responsibility, relevant knowledge, exact exam and outline date, named course or path, safe practice access, feedback and unresolved invoice components. Ask for permission and review time for a suitable learning environment. Research and the private brief require no contact details.
