Choose design work, not a shortcut past administration
Azure Solutions Architect Expert addresses translating requirements into Azure and hybrid-system designs. Microsoft requires the Azure Administrator Associate credential as well as AZ-305 for this award. An AZ-305 pass alone is not the Expert certification, and equivalent administration skills are not a substitute for that credential status. The sources reviewed here do not establish a separate order-of-sitting rule; verify booking eligibility and your award requirements in Microsoft Learn.
The intended candidate already understands operations and architecture tradeoffs. If deploying, diagnosing and recovering Azure resources is still unfamiliar, consider administration instruction or practice and the official Azure Administrator path. AZ-900 can introduce concepts but is not the required associate credential. If you already hold Administrator Associate, do not budget another exam automatically: confirm your credential record, then choose the specific design gaps to close.
Learnerside's advice: choose this path when you must explain and defend an architecture, not merely recognize service names. The award, a course and an original concept check are three different things; none alone establishes production-design competence.
Current exam and the four design areas
The AZ-305 exam page reports an English update on April 17, 2026. The study guide is labeled for that date. Confirm your booked language/version rather than treating Microsoft's approximate localization timing as a guarantee.
| Design area | Published range | Useful preparation output |
|---|
| Identity, governance and monitoring | 25-30% | Explain access boundaries, policy ownership and what evidence operators need. |
| Data storage | 20-25% | Compare durability, query needs, growth and operating cost before selecting a service. |
| Business continuity | 15-20% | Define recovery objectives and show how backup, recovery and availability differ. |
| Infrastructure | 30-35% | Defend compute, integration, migration and network choices against stated constraints. |
These are vendor ranges, not exact question counts or a score from this page. Read the official objectives for the detailed scope; this is a paraphrased decision map, not a reproduced syllabus. Microsoft offers a free Practice Assessment and exam sandbox. The published passing score is scaled: it is not a 70% pass-rate claim. No fixed exam duration or question count is verified on this page.
An optional fictional architecture exercise
An invented regional services business needs a customer portal, an internal reporting workload and hybrid connectivity. Its planning assumptions are a one-hour recovery target and up to fifteen minutes of lost data; these are fictional exercise constraints, not vendor guarantees or measured service performance.
Write two alternative designs and a short decision record. Identify the identity boundary, data classification, dependencies, cost drivers and operational owner. Explain which failures each design tolerates, what it cannot restore, and how you would test recovery. Include monitoring and a migration or rollback sequence. Challenge the design with an instructor or experienced colleague: what evidence would make you change your choice?
Use synthetic data and an authorized isolated lab only. Diagramming and documentation can be free; deployed Azure resources, network transfer and some lab subscriptions can incur charges. This exercise does not authorize spending or production changes. A diagram or twelve correct concept answers cannot prove the architecture meets real requirements.
Self-study versus the official four-day course
You can use the study guide, named Learn paths, Architecture Center and documentation as optional preparation. Free learning material does not imply free cloud consumption, unlimited lab access or exam vouchers. The October 8 Microsoft Learn FAQ says training sandboxes are no longer available; training exercises need access to an Azure subscription. This differs from the exam-interface sandbox. An employer learning environment requires permission and a known cost boundary; no personal lab or free cloud consumption is established.
Microsoft separately lists AZ-305T00-A: Design Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions, four days, with lectures and case studies. It covers architecture choices across governance, compute, storage, networks and continuity. Its audience is already experienced with Azure deployment or administration. Four days is course duration, not a preparation-time estimate or a promise that a beginner becomes an architect.
The credential overview currently shows no linked courses while the separate exam and course pages identify AZ-305T00-A. That is a catalog-display mismatch, not proof training is unavailable. Follow the exact course record; no current provider tuition, class dates, seat, lab entitlement or package inclusion is verified here.
Paid instruction can be useful for design critique, guided cases or a required schedule. Before buying, ask the exact delivery organization for the course/version, learner-created design work, instructor feedback, lab and licensing terms, recordings, accessibility, modality, time zone and cancellation rules. Verify any claimed Microsoft training authorization for that entity. A generic "gold partner" badge does not establish current authorization, identical packages or availability.
Exam cost, renewal and an employer brief
Microsoft's exam page prices by country or region and excludes applicable taxes from its displayed pricing policy. No current regional exam amount is verified here. Separate AZ-305, any still-needed Administrator credential, tuition, labs and retakes; unknown items are not zero. A two-exam arithmetic total is not a universal purchase requirement or current quote.
Microsoft role-based certifications expire annually unless renewed. The Expert renewal page admits holders within six months of expiry to the online renewal assessment; the linked policy describes free renewal. Renewal is separate from the initial exam and any Administrator record. Check your actual dates; don't assume a course attendance certificate renews the award.
For employer support, name one design decision you need to improve, the required credential status, the work sample to review, access/license needs and the still-unknown total price. Use the self-service employer brief without contact. If a class would solve a concrete gap, describe your schedule and format. Sending does not authorize provider sharing; that needs separate consent naming the recipient.
Related work and salary context
Azure architecture can involve solution design, stakeholder explanation and collaboration with administrators, developers, security and data specialists. Job titles overlap; the credential does not guarantee a particular role or promotion.
For a narrowly related occupation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics computer network architect profile reports a U.S. median annual wage of USD 134,050 in May 2025. This occupation overlaps network and hybrid-infrastructure design, not every Azure solution-architect responsibility. It is not an AZ-305-holder salary, an entry-level offer, a local-market quote or a causal certification premium. No credential-specific salary estimate is established here.
Sources and limits
Learnerside is independent of Microsoft. The exercise and concept questions are original educational material, not Microsoft exam questions or a readiness score. No provider endorsement, current price, seat or business outcome is claimed.
