Choose KCSA to explain security boundaries and control choices. If pods, services and controllers are unfamiliar, start with KCNA’s cloud-native foundations or free learning—not necessarily another exam purchase.
CKS is a separate practical security exam requiring a previously passed CKA exam. KCSA does not replace that prerequisite. Ask an employer whether the need is security literacy, reviewed hands-on work or a named credential.
Exam access and objective outline
The issuer lists no prerequisites, an online-proctored multiple-choice exam lasting 90 minutes, two-year validity, 12 months to take it and one retake. Check the candidate FAQ for identity, language, accommodations and system requirements. No Kubernetes minor-version terminal environment is established.
These issuer domain weights map the scope; the learning decisions are original Learnerside paraphrases, not copied exam questions or a complete preparation syllabus.

Free foundations versus paid learning
The KCSA issuer page links these two foundation courses. Choose the starting point that fits your knowledge; each is foundational instruction, not a verified complete KCSA-security preparation course. Exam domains do not establish taught security instruction.
Linux Foundation · On-demand course · Captured 2026-10-10
Beginner: Linux administration is helpful, not required. This is an optional introduction, not a KCSA exam prerequisite.
15–20 material hours, 90-day online access, labs and assignments, forums and a digital badge. Material hours are not teaching hours or your preparation estimate.
Public USD 0 course listing requires login before enrollment. Free course does not mean free exam or infrastructure. Selected edition, activation, permitted practice, lab hosting, equipment, cloud charges and reviewed feedback remain unknown.
Read LFS158 instruction and access evidence
Own LFS158 outline introduces microservices and orchestration, Kubernetes architecture and installation, local Minikube access, workload building blocks, authentication/authorization/admission, services, application deployment, volumes, configuration and Secrets, Ingress and community. Publisher describes online self-paced delivery, 15–20 hours of course material, hands-on labs and assignments, forums, digital badge and 90-day online access. Material hours are not contact time or personal effort. Lab hosting, equipment, cloud charges, selected access activation/edition, permitted practice, reviewed feedback and complete KCNA alignment remain unknown. Introductory instruction is not a full KCNA preparation guarantee. Capture time and delivery/cache metadata do not independently establish origin freshness.
Captured public USD0 course listing requires login before enrollment and describes 90-day online access, labs/assignments and forums. Free course is not free exam or all infrastructure; selected activation, edition, personal entitlement, lab hosting/equipment, cloud charges and reviewed feedback remain unverified. Selected tuition, seat, contact time, permitted practice and feedback remain unverified; an outline is not a current offer.
Linux Foundation · On-demand course · Captured 2026-10-10
Beginner course with starting expectations: Linux concepts and command line, package managers and Git/GitHub. Those expectations are separate from KCSA’s no formal exam prerequisites.
Self-paced, 8–10 material hours, 12-month access, forums and a digital badge. The public Lab Info heading is empty; hosted practice, lab hours and cloud charges are not established.
USD 99 course only; the USD 299 bundle includes KCNA, not KCSA. Selected payable total, tax, edition, activation, practice entitlement and reviewed feedback remain unknown.
Read LFS250 instruction and purchase evidence
Own LFS250 outline covers cloud-native architecture, container orchestration, Kubernetes fundamentals and working with Kubernetes, application delivery and observability. Publisher describes high-level architecture, distributed application delivery and monitoring, and differences from legacy environments. Eight to ten hours of course material is not contact hours or personal preparation; numeric estimated hours withheld. Online self-paced delivery, 12-month course access, discussion forums and digital badge are described. The public Lab Info heading has no specifications: hosted labs, lab hours, equipment and cloud charges remain unknown. Selected edition, seat, activation, permitted practice, reviewed feedback and complete current KCNA alignment are unverified. Capture time and delivery/cache metadata do not independently establish origin freshness.
Captured USD 99 course only; USD 299 LFS250 plus KCNA exam; USD 495 exam plus annual THRIVE-ONE subscription are distinct choices. Twelve-month course access and forums stated; selected payable total/tax, activation, edition, entitlement, lab costs, renewal/cancellation and feedback unverified. Selected tuition, seat, contact time, permitted practice and feedback remain unverified; an outline is not a current offer.
Read separate credential, multiple-choice policy and CARE sources
Issuer describes a foundational/pre-professional cloud-native security credential, no formal exam prerequisites, online-proctored multiple choice, 90 minutes, two-year validity, 12 months to schedule and take, and two attempts. Six weights14/22/22/16/16/10 retained; objectives are exam scope, not a taught syllabus. Captured USD 250 exam only or USD 495 exam plus annual THRIVE-ONE; selected checkout total/tax/region/entitlement unknown. Issuer links LFS158 and LFS250 as preparation resources, not proof of complete security instruction or personal readiness. No terminal Kubernetes minor version inferred. Delivery/cache metadata does not independently establish origin freshness; material hours are not contact time or personal preparation.
Exact prior CARE original and observation timestamp reused, not a fresh capture. Previously earned KCSA, current or non-current, can renew through CKS achievement or recertification on or after January1,2026, with aligned expiration; never-held KCSA is not awarded. The separate CKS cascade also includes CKA and KCNA, with CKA eligibility beginning June18,2026. Personal account eligibility unknown; this is not a requirement to buy an advanced exam, a KCSA attendance prerequisite, or a universal renewal bill. Delivery/cache metadata does not independently establish origin freshness; material hours are not contact time or personal preparation.
KCSA credential evidence was captured October 10; course, multiple-choice FAQ and CARE originals retain their earlier observation timestamps. Delivery and cache headers do not establish origin freshness. Selected edition, activation, permitted practice, feedback and complete KCSA alignment remain unverified. Historical October 1 exam, salary and identity records remain separate.
Exam price is not total training cost
The October 10 issuer capture retains the October 1 package observations: the KCSA page lists USD 250 exam only or USD 495 exam plus annual THRIVE-ONE. These dated package observations are not a final checkout total or team quote.
Confirm exam identity, currency, region, tax, access start, attempt entitlement and subscription renewal/cancellation. Decide who actually needs a credential before multiplying seats. Check whether a selected paid offer actually supplies reviewed feedback; payment and an exam listing establish neither its quality nor a requirement to buy it.
Renewal: retake or conditional CARE
The multiple-choice FAQ describes retaking and passing before expiry, with two further years from passing. Future renewal checkout cost remains unknown.
CARE renews previously earned KCSA, current or expired, through earning or recertifying CKS on or after January 1, 2026, with aligned expiration dates. It does not award never-held KCSA. Buying an advanced exam solely for maintenance may not fit your work; verify the account and expiry record.
Build an explanation, then check it
For a fictional application, draw who can reach its API and secrets. Explain one excessive permission, a network boundary and a control’s limitation. In an employer brief, record the work requirement, current gap, any practice attempted, if relevant, and the feedback you need to verify in a selected offer.
Use synthetic data and disposable local tools. Do not probe production, collect real secrets or buy cloud resources for these exercises. A diagram is discussion evidence—not proof you implemented or validated its controls.
Optional: draft a fictional security handoff
On paper, use a fictional document service with a public API, a worker and a synthetic token. Map the actors and trust boundaries; name one excessive permission and one network boundary. Write what evidence would support the proposed control, what it cannot prove, who should review it and when you would revisit it. A one-page security memo is a discussion artifact, not an implemented control. No account, cluster, real records or spending is needed.
Security analysis, cloud support, platform operations and application delivery can involve these decisions. Practise explaining risk to a nontechnical stakeholder and identifying when a specialist must review your proposal. KCSA alone establishes neither job eligibility nor production authority.
BLS information security analysts, checked October 1, reports a U.S. May 2025 median annual wage of USD 129,180 and typical bachelor’s-level education with related experience. This occupation measure is not a KCSA-holder salary, entry-level offer or certification pay premium.
Optional: check cloud-native security concepts
Twelve original fictional decision questions cover six domains. They are not actual exam questions, a complete syllabus or a pass prediction. Selecting an answer or evidence plan does not demonstrate performed security work.
