Should you pursue CSSLP now?
ISC2 CSSLP focuses on applying security throughout software design, implementation, testing, deployment and the supply chain. It can fit software engineers, application-security practitioners, architects and people who own secure-development processes. It is not a generic promise of a software-security job or a substitute for demonstrating your own design and delivery work.
The first decision is exam readiness versus certification eligibility. ISC2 requires four years of cumulative full-time experience in one or more CSSLP domains to become certified. A qualifying post-secondary degree in computer science, IT or a related field may satisfy up to one year; part-time work and internships may count under ISC2's rules. Passing the exam without enough experience can lead to Associate of ISC2, with up to five years to earn the required experience. It does not grant the CSSLP credential immediately. Compare your documented work history with the ISC2 experience rules; course entry and personal readiness remain separate. You can ask for help immediately.
- You already work across secure software delivery: Map your experience to the eight official domains and use project examples to expose weak areas. If you have the qualifying experience, compare self-study with instruction for the gaps you cannot close alone.
- You know software but have little security responsibility: Public reading and an optional fictional design exercise can help identify gaps. A short class cannot manufacture years of qualifying experience.
- An employer names CSSLP: Confirm whether it needs the full credential, a future Associate path or specific secure-development skills. Do not represent exam passage or a course completion as the full certification.
The current exam in plain language
The ISC2 CSSLP outline, effective September 15, 2023 and checked September 29, 2026, lists eight domains. Their weights are average shares, not guaranteed counts of questions on a particular exam form or a provider course outline.
| Domain | Average share | A useful readiness exercise |
|---|
| Secure Software Concepts | 12% | Explain trust boundaries, authentication and failure behavior for one application. |
| Secure Software Lifecycle Management | 11% | Show how security decisions enter planning, ownership and change control. |
| Secure Software Requirements | 13% | Turn abuse cases and data obligations into testable requirements. |
| Secure Software Architecture and Design | 15% | Review a design for least privilege, data flow and safe defaults. |
| Secure Software Implementation | 14% | Find and correct a flaw without introducing a new one. |
| Secure Software Testing | 14% | Select tests that expose both technical and process weaknesses. |
| Secure Software Deployment, Operations, Maintenance | 11% | Plan release, monitoring, incident response and a safe rollback. |
| Secure Software Supply Chain | 10% | Assess a dependency, build pipeline and update provenance. |
ISC2 lists a three-hour, 125-item, English-language exam with multiple-choice and advanced item types, and a 700/1,000 passing score. That score is not a percentage-correct target or a promise about practice-test performance. Review the official outline again near registration; a static guide cannot guarantee which questions appear. Learnerside's limited readiness material, if shown here, is a prompt for gap-finding, not an official exam simulation or pass prediction.
Preparation and paid instruction
Public reading can include the official outline and ISC2 self-study resources. ISC2 lists free flash cards and community resources alongside paid online self-paced training. Optional original fictional work: an invented library offers room bookings through a small application. On paper, draw the sign-in and booking trust boundaries, write an abuse case and a testable authorization requirement, review an invented dependency change, and record security-test, release and rollback decisions for a reviewer. No account, real code, system access or spending is required. This is a Learnerside exercise, not an official item or readiness score. If you cannot explain a tradeoff or recover from a flawed decision, targeted mentoring, instructor feedback or structured labs may be worth more than another question bank.
ISC2 also offers official online self-paced CSSLP training and classroom training. These are training routes, not verified seats, tuition or guarantees on this page. For any seller, request the exact outline revision, delivery organization and instructor, date and time zone, hands-on work, recordings, access period, accessibility support, exam voucher and retake terms, cancellation rules and total cost per learner. A claim of official or authorized training should be checked with ISC2 for that specific offer; it does not by itself establish the terms you need.
Budget the whole path, not only the exam
ISC2's regional pricing page lists the CSSLP exam at US $599 for the Americas and other listed U.S.-dollar regions, with separate GBP and EUR prices. ISC2 says tax and currency depend on the exam location; verify your actual Pearson checkout. The exam fee excludes instruction, labs, travel, cancellation or rescheduling, and a retake. ISC2's maintenance-fee policy currently lists a US $50 annual fee for Associates of ISC2 and a US $135 annual member fee for CSSLP holders and other named certifications. ISC2 says an Associate who completes certification during a paid annual period may owe the difference. The October 9 membership reference above specifies 90 CPE over three years: 60 Group A plus 30 Group A or B; 30 annually is suggested. Associate status separately requires 15 Group A CPE annually. First member maintenance payment follows application approval before certification grant. Tuition, tax, retakes and extensions are separate; unknown tuition is not zero. Check your account and timing rather than assuming one global total.
Roles and salary: avoid a false certification premium
The domains overlap application-security engineering, secure-software architecture, software engineering, quality assurance and supply-chain security work. Employers vary in what they require. Broad occupation wages cannot isolate CSSLP holders or prove a pay increase caused by the credential; this page makes no CSSLP-specific salary claim. Use current job descriptions, location and your work portfolio to decide whether CSSLP is a useful signal for your target role.
Next action
You can compare qualification and practical gaps, or ask for help immediately. Research, exercises and experience checks are not prerequisites for a request. If structured help would close a real gap, describe your timing and format or draft an employer brief. A Learnerside request does not authorize sharing it with a provider; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
