CompTIA Server+
Decision summary
Practice server configuration and recovery before buying training
Server+ V5 covers broader physical and virtual infrastructure. Check practical readiness, the exact course outline and current CE status separately. Old price observations and older holder status do not establish a current package or universal renewal bill.
Read the CompTIA Server+ decision guideCertification details change. Always confirm final pricing, availability, and credential terms on the official provider page linked in the sources below before you pay for anything.
Who should choose Server+?
Choose Server+ when your work involves installing, maintaining and recovering physical or virtual server infrastructure. It spans hardware, operating systems, storage, services, security and troubleshooting. It is not simply Linux+ with hardware, a cloud-platform specialization or permission to maintain every production server. If your immediate task is Linux command-line administration, compare Linux+; if an employer requires a particular platform, confirm that requirement before purchasing a vendor-neutral course.
The official Server+ page, checked September 30, 2026, recommends A+ or equivalent knowledge and two years of hands-on server-environment experience. No formal registration prerequisite is stated there. Those recommendations are not mandatory earlier badges or a course-entry guarantee. Practical readiness, exam registration and an employer's authorization are different decisions.
Current exam and practical outline
CompTIA currently lists V5 / SK0-005, launched May 18, 2021: up to 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions, 90 minutes, with English and Japanese. It lists a 750 passing score on a 100-900 scale, not a percentage-correct target, and test-center or online-proctored delivery. No exact retirement or successor date was verified in this review; the exam's age alone is not evidence it is retired.
The checked issuer outline gives four areas. The work examples are Learnerside practice guidance, not reproduced proprietary objectives, provider teaching hours or actual exam questions.
| Area | Weight | A practical deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Server hardware installation and management | 18% | Document power, cooling, storage fault tolerance, compatibility and a safe maintenance plan. |
| Server administration | 30% | Build and document a lab server's OS, network services, roles, monitoring and lifecycle settings. |
| Security and disaster recovery | 24% | Explain identity, hardening, backup, recovery and decommissioning controls. |
| Troubleshooting | 28% | Isolate a hardware, OS, service, storage or network failure and verify recovery. |
Free practice versus paid server training
Start with a disposable local VM and synthetic files on equipment you own. Keep a configuration record; add one test service, apply a baseline, create a backup and restore it into a clean lab environment. Introduce one controlled failure and record how you separated symptoms from causes. Do not use production accounts, customer data or an employer's equipment without authorization. VMs cannot prove physical racking, redundant-power or hardware-replacement competence: those require a safe supervised environment. Commercial evaluation software is time-limited and subject to its license, not permanently free production software.
The current credential page distinguishes CertMaster Learn+Labs, Learn, Practice and Labs. Learn+Labs combines instruction and practical environments; Learn focuses on concepts and simulated activities; Practice supplies assessment exercises; Labs supplies guided hands-on work. These are not interchangeable products. Exact regional prices, access duration, software entitlements and your selected bundle's voucher/retake terms remain unverified here. Estimated product hours are not your required study time.
For instructor-led training, request an SK0-005 course outline showing learner-operated server services, safe storage exercises, hardening, recovery and fault isolation. Confirm which operating systems and software versions are used, the limits of simulated hardware, lab reset and post-class access, instructor feedback, accessibility, recording availability, modality, time zone and cancellation. No current provider tuition, seat or authorization is verified here. A vendor-partner badge does not establish the exact delivery entity, courseware or bundle contents.
Price, CE renewal and older credentials
Retained observations conflict: the U.S. exam-fee seed records USD 399 on June 8, 2026, while an older independent study draft refers to about USD 390 on July 10. Neither is a current quote. This review does not average them or update their checked dates. Confirm the exact SK0-005 voucher, region, currency, taxes and expiry through the CompTIA store. Tuition, labs, software, retakes and renewal are separate, and unknown costs are not zero.
The current CE overview, checked September 30, lists Server+ ce with three-year expiry. The renewal-fee page lists USD 150 over that period only for CEU-upload renewal, not an unavoidable annual bill. Other renewal routes have different conditions and costs; a generic CertMaster CE mention does not establish Server+-specific availability.
Older Server+ awards need an individual status check. Historical Good-for-Life treatment and current Server+ ce are not interchangeable. The issuer's detailed older-award policy was inaccessible during this review, so no cutoff-date or automatic conversion claim is made here. Check your exact credential and expiry in your CompTIA account or with issuer support before purchasing renewal. Do not infer an older holder's obligation from the current exam page, and do not assume a new award is lifetime. We withhold a universal three-year ownership total.
Three original server practice questions
1. A virtual-host storage array is degraded but workloads are running. What should happen before replacement? Establish the RAID state, redundancy, backups, supported parts and maintenance procedure. A VM-only lab does not authorize physical hardware work.
2. A service runs locally but remote clients fail after a firewall change. How do you isolate the fault? Compare listener state, addresses, DNS, routes, host/network policy and logs against the previous configuration; verify access after a bounded repair.
3. A file service needs a four-hour recovery point and one-hour recovery time. What evidence would prove the plan? Restore synthetic data into a safe lab, measure data age and elapsed recovery time, and document dependencies and failure conditions. A successful backup job alone is not a proven restore.
These are independent learning exercises, not actual CompTIA exam questions. The optional twelve-question check does not cover every objective or establish production competence, exam readiness or a passing result.
Roles, skills and salary context
Systems administration and infrastructure support are task associations, not certification-based job guarantees. Relevant skills include OS and service administration, storage planning, access controls, monitoring, backups, change documentation and fault isolation. Employer titles and education/experience requirements vary; one credential does not replace supervised practice.
O*NET's network and computer systems administrator profile is broader occupation context. BLS, checked September 30, reports U.S. May 2025 median annual pay of USD 99,130 for that occupation. It is not a Server+-holder salary, an entry-level offer or a causal pay premium. Compare actual local duties, education, experience and salary ranges; do not use the national median as the return on a course purchase.
Choose your next action
Build a small configuration-and-recovery record and identify the support or practice you still need. Prepare an employer brief around a concrete operational deliverable, or ask about server training. Research and planning do not require contact or an exact budget. Provider sharing requires separate consent naming the recipient.
Learnerside is independent of CompTIA. Current exam facts do not refresh historical prices or settle older holder status; no employment outcome, pass prediction or live provider booking is claimed.
