Salesforce Platform Developer: learn to explain and test the code before buying exam preparation

This route is for custom application logic and interfaces on Salesforce. Choose it for a development task you can name—not because a badge sounds more advanced than administration or app building.

Who it fits—and why it can be difficult

The current credential name is Salesforce Certified Platform Developer; the retained page address includes “developer-i.” The issuer lists no formal exam prerequisite. Its audience guidance describes one to two years as a developer and at least six months on Lightning Platform; Administrator is recommended, not required.

If coding, object relationships or automated tests are new to you, first practice those foundations without an exam deadline. If you already develop software, focus on how a shared platform constrains transactions, access and releases. A small change that works for one record can fail for a batch or a less-privileged user.

App Builder emphasizes declarative applications; Administrator emphasizes CRM operations. Developer involves programmatic work and choosing when not to code. Neither an app-building badge nor generic programming experience proves platform-specific proficiency.

Exam details and summarized objectives

The observed published guide aligns to Summer ’25: 60 questions plus up to five unscored, 105 minutes and a 68% passing score. The exam is proctored online or onsite, without reference materials. A seat and a public exam code are not verified here; do not infer a newer blueprint from today’s calendar.

This brief learning map is original analysis, not a reproduced syllabus. Use the issuer guide to confirm the full objectives and compare a provider’s current outline.

FamilyWeightOriginal learning decision
Developer Fundamentals27%Choose an implementation boundary and a data model; account for shared platform constraints.
Process Automation and Logic28%Reason about queries, changes, transactions, repeated execution and recoverable failures.
User Interface25%Connect an interface to server behavior without bypassing access controls.
Testing, Debugging, and Deployment20%Use controlled test data, investigate results and verify a release.

Plan practice around behavior: which records a query returns, which changes a transaction makes, who can see the result and what a failed operation leaves behind. Knowing a term is useful but does not demonstrate implementing it safely.

Free preparation versus paid training

Begin with the issuer-linked Platform Developer study trail and preparation trailmix. Review scenarios are not a complete programming education or a required training-hours total. The guide also links development references; use those to investigate a question rather than memorizing an answer.

Practice in a personally controlled Trailhead Playground or Developer Edition with fictional records. Confirm the environment needed for each exercise. Generic access does not promise Agentforce entitlement or authorize paid features. Never copy employer/customer records or credentials into personal practice.

The issuer recommends DEX450: Build Applications Programmatically on the Salesforce Platform. The linked course page did not expose readable terms in this check: current outline, duration, tuition, schedule/time zone, format, labs, voucher, recordings, feedback and cancellation are unknown. The recommendation is not a mandate to buy it, evidence of an available seat or proof that another seller is authorized.

Buy foundations when you need instruction in the programming concepts themselves. Buy targeted review when you can implement a small change but need help diagnosing a specific platform failure. Ask who runs and reviews the exercises; watching an instructor demonstrate code does not establish your own practice.

Exam cost and purchase questions

The dated guide lists USD 200 registration and USD 100 retake, plus applicable taxes; JPY 30,000 and JPY 15,000 are separate regional amounts. Check the payable checkout price. Tuition, feature-specific lab access, further attempts and maintenance costs are separate or unknown—not a universal three-year total.

Before paying, obtain an exact outline and price basis per learner or cohort, meeting times in your time zone, access duration, included practice, support and cancellation terms. Keep your preferred modality and schedule distinct from what a provider actually offers.

A practical work sample and a useful buying brief

Original fictional exercise: a lending application changes many reservation records. State the intended result, choose declarative or programmatic behavior, create synthetic test data and test one record, a batch, a denied user and a repeated action. Record expected versus actual results and one correction. Do not call a design proposal or selected answer a completed implementation.

An individual brief should identify the failing tested behavior. An employer brief should connect feedback to a named work gap and time away from work. For a team, separate coding foundations from experienced code review, and name who owns access and release decisions. Reuse the optional proposal renderer; the practice does not confer production deployment authority.

Maintenance and further learning

The guide requires annual Trailhead maintenance; missing the applicable deadline expires the credential. Check the maintenance badge and your account, not an assumed three-year validity cycle. A current maintenance price, your individual due date and future fees remain unverified here.

After demonstrating a basic development change, choose the next task from your work needs. This guide does not establish advanced integration or architecture competence, job eligibility or a need to purchase every Salesforce credential.

Roles, skills and salary context

Related work can include application development, platform customization, secure interface behavior, debugging and test/release review. Employers set different requirements for Salesforce developers, general software developers and technical consultants. Show tested work, explain tradeoffs and acknowledge where more experienced review is needed; a certification is not a hiring guarantee.

BLS software developers, checked October 1, reports a U.S. May 2025 median annual wage of USD 135,980 and typical bachelor’s-level entry education. That is the developer occupation, not the combined developers/QA/testers figure, Salesforce-certified pay, an entry offer or a causal badge premium.

Optional: check Salesforce development concepts

Ten original fictional questions cover four families. They are not actual exam questions, full syllabus coverage, proof of implemented code or a pass prediction.
