Lean Six Sigma Green Belt decision guide

Choose the credential before you choose the Green Belt course

“Green Belt” is a level used by multiple organizations—not one universal certification. First identify what your employer, client or career goal will accept. Then compare training by readiness, project work, statistics depth, schedule, support and total price.

The direct answer

ASQ CSSGB, PeopleCert IASSC ICGB and a course-issued certificate are different outcomes

ASQ CSSGB

ASQ requires three years of full-time, paid experience in one or more Body of Knowledge areas, with no education waiver. Its computer-delivered exam has 110 questions, 100 scored, and 4 hours 18 minutes of exam time. The current exam fee is USD 483; training and the exam application are separate purchases unless a specific offer says otherwise.

Verify ASQ requirements, exam details and testing windows.

PeopleCert IASSC ICGB

PeopleCert publishes no formal prerequisite and says prior Lean Six Sigma knowledge is beneficial. Its Green Belt scope includes DMAIC, inferential statistics, hypothesis testing, regression, process capability and statistical process control. The credential is currently renewed every three years.

Provider-issued certificate

A training provider may award its own or a partner’s Green Belt credential after course attendance, assignments or an assessment. That can be useful, but it is not automatically ASQ CSSGB or PeopleCert IASSC ICGB. Require the issuer, assessment, renewal rule and public verification method in writing.

Readiness before pace

No formal prerequisite does not mean no useful background

A practical Green Belt learner should be comfortable interpreting data, percentages and variation; working in spreadsheets or statistical software; mapping a real process; and explaining a measurable problem to stakeholders. The strongest applied path also gives you access to a process, usable data and a sponsor who can approve changes.

If statistics, process mapping and DMAIC are all new, a five-day intensive can become vocabulary overload. Consider foundational learning or a spread-out course with project feedback. If you already improve processes at work, a focused course or exam-preparation path may be enough.

Project-based training gate

Check project access before buying project-based training

ASQ’s retained live-course evidence requires a management-approved improvement project and states a USD 10,000–50,000 positive business-impact target. That is a requirement of that exact course, not proof that every Green Belt learner can produce that result and it does not make project work a universal Green Belt certification prerequisite.

Named sponsor

Identify who can approve the problem, protect learner time, remove blockers and review the result.

Defined process boundary

Name the process, customer or stakeholder, problem statement and what is outside the project.

Usable baseline data

Confirm that relevant data can be accessed, interpreted and handled under the organization’s privacy and security rules.

Software and access

Verify the required spreadsheet or statistical software, license, environment and technical support before class begins.

Authority to test a change

Confirm who can approve a pilot or process change. Course attendance does not grant operating authority.

Time to measure the result

Make room for collection, analysis, implementation and follow-up beyond the live teaching hours.

If those conditions are missing, choose an exam-preparation or simulated-project option that states its outcome honestly, or delay the project-based course. Do not invent a savings target or use sensitive workplace data merely to satisfy an exercise.

ASQ live virtual: applied and spread out

ASQ course VLSSGB2025ASQ publishes 67 hours across two or three months and requires a management-approved improvement project with a stated USD 10,000–50,000 positive business impact. It expects the latest Minitab and uses gaps between sessions for workplace application. The page showed USD 5,749 list and USD 5,179 member pricing, but no scheduled offering.

ASQ self-paced: long access, self-managed practice

ASQ course SPLSSGB2022ASQ publishes 365-day access and says Yellow Belt is not required to enroll. It showed USD 1,520 list and USD 1,370 member pricing. Confirm exercises, support, software, project feedback and whether the exam is included; enrollment in training does not remove CSSGB’s separate experience gate.

New Horizons: five-day PMA credential path

New Horizons publishes five virtual instructor-led days for USD 2,295. Its outline covers Lean tools, DMAIC, process mapping, statistics, FMEA, hypothesis testing, ANOVA and control plans. Successful attendance and assignments lead to a Project Management Academy credential—not ASQ CSSGB or PeopleCert ICGB.

The CSSC directory currently lists Project Management Academy for accredited Green Belt training, while warning that directory records require due diligence. Confirm the exact PMA program, assessment, current listing, seller, delivery entity, software, recordings and cancellation terms.

What a useful outline should answer

Ask these questions before requesting approval

  • Which issuing body and exact credential will appear on the certificate or badge?
  • Is there a proctored exam, course assessment, project review—or only attendance?
  • Which DMAIC and statistics topics are taught live, practised by the learner and left for self-study?
  • Will you complete a real improvement project, a simulation or only exercises?
  • Which software and license are required, and who pays for them?
  • What instructor feedback, recordings, office hours and post-course access are included?
  • What are every meeting date, time zone, attendance rule, total price and cancellation term?

Build the requirement first

Compare Green Belt paths without committing to a provider

In the finder, name the credential if one is required—or say that the issuer is still open. Add your current experience, access to a real process, software needs, preferred pace, work schedule, time zone, deadline and employer-approval requirements. Learnerside will show a provider-neutral plan before asking for contact information.
