Choose governance work, not a project-coordination badge
Choose CGEIT for experienced enterprise IT governance, advisory or oversight work: decision rights, strategic alignment, resources, investment benefits and risk. It is not a general project-management credential or an entry-level shortcut into executive responsibility. Course attendance does not confer authority to approve an investment or accept organizational risk.
The official credential page, checked October 1, 2026, frames governance of IT's contribution to the enterprise. Start with the decisions your employer expects you to support, not a promised salary increase.
Testing is open; qualification requires relevant experience
ISACA's certification rules, checked October 1, allow exam entry before the experience requirement is complete. Full certification requires five years managing, advising, overseeing or otherwise supporting enterprise IT governance, across at least three of four domains, including at least one year in Domain 1. Experience must be within the ten years before applying. Apply within five years after passing and obtain verification; an exam pass alone is not the full award.
The 2026 candidate guide, checked October 1, lists 150 multiple-choice questions in four hours, with PSI test-center or remote delivery. Verify the current language, appointment, accommodations and system requirements. Continuous registration is not proof that a particular date is available.
Objectives, skills and an original governance exercise
The current official outline, checked October 1, separates four areas. These editorial summaries are not a copied syllabus or a complete provider course outline.
| Area | Weight | Decision to practice |
|---|
| Governance of Enterprise IT | 40% | Define accountability, alignment and governing-body evidence. |
| IT Resources | 15% | Assess sourcing, capacity, capabilities and lifecycle constraints. |
| Benefits Realization | 26% | Specify the expected value, owner and measures of an investment. |
| Risk Optimization | 19% | Relate material IT risks to enterprise appetite and oversight. |
Use invented facts on paper; no account, real company records, system access or spending is required. This exercise is optional.
Original fictional exercise: three technology investments compete for insufficient funding and engineering capacity. Write a governance memo comparing alignment, expected benefits, resource constraints and material risks. Identify decision rights, accountable owners, evidence gaps and post-approval measures. Show what requires the governing body's judgment instead of treating a favorable spreadsheet score as authorization.
Learnerside's original questions are concept checks, not real ISACA exam items, complete domain coverage, a pass prediction or proof of governance experience.
Preparation options and what an outside course must establish
The issuer's preparation section, checked October 1, offers a free practice quiz, a paid review manual and a paid QAE database with six-month access. Engage study groups are member-exclusive. A standalone online review course was not verified in this check; do not assume every ISACA credential has the same products. Confirm current editions, checkout prices and whether an exact bundle includes exam registration. A manual or question database is not instructor-led feedback.
Use a governance work sample to identify whether you need coaching, structured study, accessibility or group discussion before paying. Ask an outside provider for a dated outline tied to the current domains, case exercises, instructor feedback, schedule, modality, time zone and access/cancellation terms. Verify its exact entity and credential scope in ISACA's partner directory. Authorization is not a guarantee of a seat, tuition or package contents. The October 1 review did not verify an outside class date or price. The separately observed October 9 chapter listing above advertises a dated event; it does not confirm a seat, selected tuition or authorization for another provider.
Exam, application and maintenance are separate costs
The 2026 candidate guide, checked October 1, lists USD 575 member or USD 760 nonmember per exam registration. The application fee is a separate USD 50. Budget instruction, membership, materials, tools, taxes and retakes separately. Member exam pricing is not an automatic total-cost saving; current regional checkout and terms control.
The CGEIT maintenance policy, checked October 1, requires 20 CPE hours annually and 120 over three years, with an annual USD 45 member or USD 85 nonmember certification maintenance fee. Multi-certification reductions and qualifying CPE rules may affect an individual's cost. Unknown extras are not zero; no universal ownership total is presented.
Roles, salary and next step
Enterprise IT governance leader, advisor and oversight work are editorial associations, not a Project Coordinator progression or an employment guarantee. No reviewed single-occupation salary mapping is established here. Pay is unknown rather than substituting a broad cybersecurity average; compare actual governance duties, location and experience in target jobs. Holding CGEIT does not establish a causal salary premium.
Prepare a self-service employer brief around the governance decision and evidence you need, or ask about CGEIT format and timing. Research does not require contact. Reply permission does not authorize provider sharing; separate consent must name the intended recipient. Learnerside is independent of ISACA.
