Database Engineer or Data Engineer?
The Google Cloud Professional Cloud Database Engineer certification focuses on application databases: selecting, deploying, operating, migrating and recovering database solutions on Google Cloud. It is a stronger fit when your job owns database availability, access, performance and migration than when it primarily builds analytics pipelines or warehouses. For that different work, compare the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer guide. Neither credential guarantees a job or replaces real evidence of operating data systems.
Google lists no formal exam prerequisite. It recommends five or more years of database and IT experience, including two years hands-on with Google Cloud database solutions. A shorter preparation step emphasizes two years hands-on with those solutions. These are readiness recommendations, not booking rules or proof that a class will make you exam-ready. If you are new to databases, compare beginner instruction first; course entry and professional readiness are separate.
What the current guide actually measures
Google links its Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam guide (historically recorded as version 1.2) from the current credential page. As checked September 29, 2026, it gives four approximate section weights, not exact question counts or a vendor course outline.
| Guide section | Approximate share | A practical decision to test |
|---|
| Design scalable and highly available cloud database solutions | 32% | Choose a database design from workload, consistency, access, cost and recovery needs. |
| Manage a solution spanning multiple database technologies | 25% | Diagnose access and performance, plan backups, automate routine work and control cost. |
| Migrate data solutions | 23% | Choose a migration path, fallback and acceptable outage window. |
| Deploy scalable and highly available databases on Google Cloud | 20% | Provision, test failover and recover under a realistic incident. |
The current guide includes application database choices, SQL and NoSQL needs, high availability, disaster recovery, migration and cost optimization; it also mentions newer vector and generative-AI use cases. A course that only teaches one database product or only analytics engineering may not cover the exam decision. Learnerside paraphrases the issuer guide rather than copying its task list.
Instruction and an optional work sample
The issuer guide, sample questions and certification learning-path link are optional scope references; they do not establish selected course access.
An optional fictional work sample: an invented retailer needs to move an order database with a short outage window. On paper, list workload and recovery requirements, compare two database choices, design a fallback and identify the evidence needed to test recovery. Use invented systems and data; no account, deployment or spending is required. This is an original Learnerside exercise, not an official exam item or a readiness prediction. Cloud practice, if selected later, may incur charges; free-tier limits do not guarantee zero cloud-use cost.
Instruction can be useful when you need feedback on production database tradeoffs, a supervised recovery lab or a fixed team schedule. It is not a prerequisite to sit the exam. No dated Cloud Database Engineer provider seat, partner authorization, tuition or courseware revision has been verified for this page. Before paying, ask for the exact guide version, legal seller and delivery organization, date and time zone, learner-operated labs, cloud credits and possible overages, instructor feedback, recordings and access period, accessibility support, voucher and retake terms, cancellation rules and total cost per learner. A provider badge does not establish those terms.
Exam fee is not a training quote
As checked September 29, 2026, Google lists a two-hour exam, 50-60 multiple-choice or multiple-select questions, English or Japanese, and a US $200 registration fee plus applicable tax. Online-proctored and test-center options are listed. Verify your local checkout and appointment. The registration price is not tuition, cloud-lab usage, retakes, a voucher guarantee or an all-in cost.
Roles, salary and next action
The skills overlap database administrator, database reliability engineer, cloud database architect and data-platform operations work. Actual employer responsibilities may differ. Occupation-level wages cannot isolate holders of this credential or prove a pay increase; this page makes no certification-specific salary claim.
You can ask about instruction immediately. Research and the optional exercise are not prerequisites for help. For an optional comparison, use an invented database workload alongside the issuer-linked guide, and explain one design or recovery decision on paper. If guided practice would close a specific gap, describe your timing and format or draft an employer brief. A Learnerside request does not authorize provider sharing; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
