Should you pursue SCS-C03 now?
AWS Certified Security - Specialty is a specialty credential for people who secure AWS workloads and make tradeoffs across detection, response, infrastructure, identity, data protection and governance. The current exam is SCS-C03. It is not a general cybersecurity introduction or proof that a person can secure every cloud platform.
AWS's SCS-C03 guide describes a target candidate with roughly 3-5 years securing cloud solutions. Its credential page describes an intended audience with five years in IT security and at least two years securing AWS workloads. Those are experience profiles, not a formal prior-certification requirement: AWS says you need not earn another AWS certification first. A newer practitioner can study the material, but a course alone will not replace incident response, identity or multi-account operating judgment.
If your work is primarily designing broad AWS architectures, compare a solutions-architect route instead. If you own security controls in real AWS environments, compare the six current domains with the work you want instruction to support.
Current exam scope and real difficulty
The official C03 exam guide gives these shares of scored content, not exact question counts or a pass-rate prediction:
| Domain | Scored share | Useful self-check |
|---|
| Detection | 16% | Can you design and troubleshoot account-level logging, monitoring and alerting? |
| Incident Response | 14% | Can you test a response plan and assess the scope of a security event? |
| Infrastructure Security | 18% | Can you choose and troubleshoot controls for network edges and compute workloads? |
| Identity and Access Management | 20% | Can you reason about authentication, authorization and least-privilege at scale? |
| Data Protection | 18% | Can you choose controls for data in transit, at rest and in keys or secrets? |
| Security Foundations and Governance | 14% | Can you manage accounts, deployment guardrails and compliance evidence? |
AWS lists a 170-minute, 65-question exam. Its guide says 50 questions are scored and 15 are unscored; it also describes multiple-choice, multiple-response, ordering and matching items. A scaled passing score of 750/1000 is not a 75% candidate pass rate. AWS's C02-to-C03 comparison shows that C03 split detection from incident response and changed some task coverage. SCS-C02 ended December 1, 2025; C03 began December 2. Match any course, question bank or employer plan to C03, not an old C02 domain chart.
An optional fictional work sample: a suspicious role is reading an S3 bucket across two accounts. Use invented logs and an account diagram to draft evidence to preserve, a containment choice, least-privilege access and key/recovery decisions. State what needs validation in an authorized isolated lab; do not use customer data or a production account. This is Learnerside's suggested exercise, not an AWS exam task or guarantee. If you can name services but cannot explain why a control failed, prioritize hands-on practice or instructor feedback over another overview video.
Free preparation, paid support and total cost
You can use the free AWS exam guide and AWS's official preparation plan. AWS points to an official practice question set, digital courses, labs and a pretest; check the access terms for each item rather than assuming the whole plan is free. Self-study can be sensible when you already operate security controls and only need to close a few domain gaps. Structured instruction is more plausible when you need guided multi-account labs, feedback on incident tradeoffs or a team-wide baseline.
AWS showed a US $300 exam fee on September 29, 2026. Its pricing link says currency and foreign-exchange treatment can vary. That fee is not a course price, retake guarantee, tax-inclusive quote or team rate. Before buying training, ask for the exact C03 outline, lab access and environment, instructor support, schedule and time zone, recordings, practice products, exam voucher, retake and cancellation terms, and total cost per learner. A public course listing is not a verified seat. We have no current comparable provider quote for this page.
The AWS credential page says certifications remain valid for three years and describes recertification by passing the latest version. It also describes a 50% next-exam discount for holders of an active AWS certification; confirm eligibility in your own certification account before budgeting that discount. No prior AWS certificate is required to register for this specialty exam.
Language timing, roles and next action
AWS says Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Latin America) and Portuguese (Brazil) versions of this exam retire after December 31, 2026. That is a language-delivery notice, not retirement of SCS-C03 or the credential. English, Japanese and Korean remain listed on the credential page as checked September 29, 2026; confirm your appointment language and local availability before paying for a class.
SCS-C03 can support cloud security engineering, security operations, platform protection and DevSecOps work where AWS security is actually part of the role. It does not confer a job or a salary premium. An occupation wage is not a wage caused by holding this certification, and AWS's old third-party salary or job-posting claims are not a basis for your own return-on-investment estimate.
For an employer brief, state the AWS accounts and security tasks in scope, the two or three weakest C03 domains, the required format and timing, and the full exam-plus-training estimate. Draft an employer brief or send a short request. A request lets Learnerside reply; it does not permit sharing your details with AWS or a training provider. That needs separate consent naming the recipient.
