Quick verdict
DEA-C01 is an applied AWS data-engineering credential. It asks you to reason about ingestion, transformation, storage, operating pipelines, and data security, not merely recognize service names. It is a plausible next target for someone already building data systems and ready to make AWS-specific design tradeoffs. If pipelines, data models and production operations are new, compare foundational support, safe practice and feedback for those gaps. An exam label alone does not establish the right starting level.
AWS's certification page, DEA-C01 exam guide, and guide revision history were checked September 29, 2026. The history lists guide version 1.1, published December 12, 2025, with no later revision shown on that check. Recheck the guide and exam language before booking.
Is this the right certification for you?
- Good fit: You design or operate data pipelines, select stores, troubleshoot performance and cost, and apply AWS security and governance controls to real data workloads.
- Learning support: You know data concepts but have not built and operated an AWS pipeline. An optional, permission-safe ingestion-to-query project can clarify failure, recovery, cost and access choices.
- Different target: A general cloud foundation is not the same decision as data engineering. AWS Cloud Practitioner is broad AWS orientation; DEA-C01 assesses applied data-engineering work. Neither automatically qualifies someone for the other's job tasks.
AWS describes an ideal target candidate with the equivalent of 2-3 years in data engineering or data architecture and 1-2 years of AWS hands-on experience. These are preparation and audience signals, not stated formal registration prerequisites. The exam guide also calls out ETL pipelines, data lakes, SQL, security, cost and performance choices, and basic programming concepts. If those are unfamiliar, don't treat the associate label as proof that a short class will cover the gap.
What is on the DEA-C01 exam?
The official guide assigns four domains by percentage of scored content. These are weights, not exact question counts or a complete syllabus. The prompts below are original ways to test your own understanding; use the AWS guide for the full task statements and in-scope services.
| Official domain | Scored weight | Practical preparation question |
|---|
| Data Ingestion and Transformation | 34% | Can you choose a batch or streaming pattern, transform data, and explain orchestration and failure handling? |
| Data Store Management | 26% | Can you justify a store, partition and catalog data, and manage retention and query cost? |
| Data Operations and Support | 22% | Can you monitor a pipeline, investigate bad or late data, and improve reliability and performance? |
| Data Security and Governance | 18% | Can you restrict access, protect sensitive data, log activity, and explain the governance boundary? |
AWS's version 1.1 revision added or clarified several modern service and data patterns. Do not use a course solely because it carries the DEA-C01 label; ask whether its exercises and service coverage reflect the current guide.
How hard is DEA-C01?
It is difficult for a learner who can name AWS services but cannot select among them for a real workload. For an optional original fictional work sample: events arrive continuously, historical files land nightly, analysts need governed queries, and the team must catch duplicate or failed loads. Explain the ingestion path, storage format, catalog, permissions, monitoring, recovery, and where costs accumulate. You can sketch a pipeline and record one retry/duplicate-handling rule, a permission boundary and a cost risk. Review whether those choices fit the fictional requirements; this is not a real exam question or pass predictor. Practice and feedback are optional decision support, and you can ask about instruction immediately.
AWS's target-experience range is useful context, not a pass-rate prediction or mandatory clock. The credential alone does not establish production data-engineering competence; a real project and an employer's role requirements still matter.
Self-study versus paid training
You can explore the public exam guide, its linked domain and service documentation, and the preparation options on the AWS certification page. AWS lists a practice question set, pretest, labs, and practice exam among its resources, but access and charges can differ by resource or subscription. Verify terms before enrolling, and do not run billable AWS services without understanding the account's spend controls.
Paid instruction may be worthwhile when you need an instructor to review architecture tradeoffs, guided labs and troubleshooting, or a team schedule. The dated comparison above records displayed tuition and access packages. A final selected seat, authorization, lab entitlement, voucher, recordings, instructor, tax and cancellation terms still require confirmation. Ask the legal seller and delivery organization for the exact course and version, exam-guide mapping, format, time zone and contact hours, safe lab environment and any usage charges, voucher inclusion, total per-learner cost, and transfer policy. A generic data-engineering course is not automatically DEA-C01 exam preparation.
Exam fee, format, and recertification
AWS lists 130 minutes, 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions, and a USD 150 exam fee on its public DEA-C01 page as checked September 29, 2026. Currency conversion, tax, discounts, testing conditions, and retake cost require checkout verification. That is the exam fee, not training tuition. The exam guide says 50 questions affect the score and 15 are unscored; the unscored questions are not identified during the exam.
AWS says the credential is valid for three years. The October 8, 2026 recheck of its recertification table distinguishes two exam routes for a three-year renewal: the latest DEA exam or Generative AI Developer Professional. A separate paid Skill Builder maintenance route provides a one-year extension. Maintenance requires an active certificate within 90 days of expiry and an active subscription. The exam-account 50% voucher is conditional; do not subtract it unless you hold it. These are different actions, durations and costs; no universal zero-cost renewal is established. Confirm personal eligibility and checkout charges. The earlier September 29 observation of the two exam paths remains historical.
Roles and salary context
The work overlaps some data-engineer and data-architect responsibilities, but job titles vary and AWS-specific pipelines are only one part of a role. Occupational pay data cannot isolate DEA-C01 holders or show that the certification causes a salary increase. No certification-specific salary figure or hiring result is claimed here.
Next action
You can ask about training now. The official guide and optional fictional pipeline review can help identify useful instruction or feedback. You can describe your timing and preferred format or draft an employer approval brief. A request does not authorize provider sharing; that requires separate consent naming the recipient.
